The appearance of a messenger signaling Galactus, often referred to as the “World Devourer” in the Marvel Universe, indicates the start of catastrophic events. This cosmic entity consumes entire planets to satisfy its insatiable appetite, and it empowers select mortals with its boundless cosmic energy, transforming them into his Heralds. Armed with the Power Cosmic, these Heralds traverse the universe seeking suitable planets for Galactus to consume. When a planet is deemed worthy, the Herald alerts Galactus, initiating destruction. Over countless years, numerous Heralds have served Galactus, some taking pride in their role while others act out of self-defense for their homeworlds. There have even been rare cases where Heralds have defied their master, employing his own Power Cosmic against him. Regardless of their allegiance, these are the most prominent Heralds associated with Galactus.
The most powerful mortals who have either remained faithful and aided in Galactus’ world-destroying endeavors or dared to defy him as the Heralds, are those who have served the World Devourer.
Ranging from the devoted followers that assist Galactus in his planetary destruction, to the rebellious Heralds who confront him, these are the mightiest mortals ever to serve the Destroyer of Worlds.
5) Air-Walker
Gabriel Lan, commonly known as Air-Walker, was among the rare individuals in the cosmos that Galactus considered a friend. As part of the interstellar law enforcement group, the Nova Corps, Gabriel found himself chosen by Galactus to replace the Silver Surfer as a Herald. Loyalty defined their relationship for many years, and they forged an unbreakable bond. During a hostile alien invasion armed with weapons capable of harming Galactus, Gabriel valiantly defended his friend, but the injuries he sustained proved lethal. Overwhelmed by the loss of his most trusted Herald, Galactus fashioned a robotic duplicate of Gabriel to remain his devoted servant.
4) Nova
As a young girl, Frankie Raye was exposed to chemicals that granted her the extraordinary ability to ignite herself at any moment. To shield her from harm, her scientist stepfather erased all recollections of her powers from her mind. Later in life, Frankie found herself in a relationship with Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch. This connection with the flaming hero assisted her in uncovering her repressed memories and abilities.
When Galactus, an immense cosmic being, arrived on Earth near starvation, Frankie made the decision to aid him in locating new worlds to consume. Her intention was to protect Earth and explore the universe. However, as she became increasingly involved in the destruction of these planets, her mental wellbeing began to deteriorate. Eventually, Galactus recognized that Frankie no longer wished to continue aiding him in his search for planets to devour and thus discarded her, returning instead to his loyal Heralds.
3) Firelord
Pyreus Kril was initially a part of the Nova Corps but later transformed into the Firelord, a servant of Galactus, after his friend Gabriel Lan was changed into Air Walker. In search of Gabriel, Pyreus confronted Galactus, unaware of Gabriel’s demise, and demanded to know his whereabouts. Moved by Pyreus’s resolve, Galactus offered him the knowledge he sought in return for becoming a Herald. Pyreus agreed, gaining the power of a star and a staff that could shoot fireballs, but at the cost of forgetting Gabriel to serve more loyally. Later, with Thor’s assistance, Firelord regained his memories of Gabriel and relinquished his role as Galactus’s Herald. Now, Firelord travels across the cosmos as a protector of the innocent from evil forces.
2) Terrax
Originally known as Tyros, a powerful alien dictator who could control stone with his mind, transformed into Terrax the Tamer – a ruthless ruler not hesitating to cause devastation on entire planets. Unlike other Heralds, Terrax’s disregard for planetary destruction set him apart, earning him a place among Galactus’s followers.
To wield the Cosmic Power, Galactus equipped Terrax with an axe capable of firing energy blasts strong enough to obliterate planets. However, despite his readiness to destroy worlds, Terrax remained disloyal towards Galactus and made numerous attempts to seize his power, even attempting to persuade the Fantastic Four to eliminate Galactus.
After multiple betrayals, Galactus ultimately rescinded Terrax’s position as a Herald. Now liberated, Terrax has repeatedly sought to subdue Earth but has consistently been stopped by its defenders.
1) Silver Surfer
In 1965, the Marvel Universe grew vastly with the arrival of Norrin Radd, better known as the Silver Surfer. Originating from the peaceful planet Zenn-La, Norrin was faced with a threat: Galactus, a cosmic being intent on consuming his homeworld. To save Zenn-La, Norrin agreed to serve as Galactus’s messenger, or Herald. In this role, he received the Power Cosmic, granting him extraordinary abilities and the famous board that propels him faster than light. With these powers, Norrin can manipulate energy, teleport, read minds, fly, and even alter time. Loyal to Galactus for many years, it was during a visit to Earth that Norrin’s feelings for humanity stirred. Moved by the planet’s beauty and its inhabitants, he defied his master and teamed up with the Fantastic Four to protect Earth from destruction. Since then, Norrin has become one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe, fearlessly battling ancient malevolent forces.
