The iconic character known as Batgirl holds a significant place in DC Comics’ pantheon of heroes. Familiar to many comic book enthusiasts are various Batgirls, like Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain, who have joined forces with Batman throughout the years. Since her debut during the Silver Age of comics, Batgirl has been an integral member of the Bat-Family. Often assisting Batman and Robin in their adventures, she’s also headlined numerous solo series where she takes charge on her own missions. In essence, Batgirl stands as a true queen among comic book royalty and remains an essential component of Batman’s team.
Over the years since their debut, various versions of Batgirl’s outfits have been introduced. Many of these costumes are instantly recognizable to fans of comic books due to their iconic status. Although some of these suits were quite stylish, others fell short of expectations. For several decades now, Batgirl has been a staple character in the comic book world, with numerous girls and women assuming the role while donning different costumes, some of which missed the mark. Despite Batgirl’s enduring popularity, not all of her outfits have been particularly impressive.
5) Batman: White Knight
In the “Batman: White Knight” mini-series, Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl, sported a distinct new outfit unlike any she’d worn previously. This suit included a petite cape, an original bat insignia on her chest, and a mask adorned with tiny bat ears. Compared to the suits Barbara has worn since her initial appearance, it was quite noticeable, though not necessarily in a positive light. It ranks as one of her least appealing costumes during her superhero career.
4) Misfit
Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe, often known as Misfit, temporarily adopted the title of Batgirl following Cassandra Cain’s departure. Distinguishing herself from Barbara Gordon and Cassandra, Charlotte possessed magical abilities. Her costume was distinct, comprising a denim skirt, leggings, and black high-tops, along with a blue top bearing her version of the Bat Symbol and a cape resembling those worn by Barbara, albeit in black and yellow. Although this suit sets itself apart from what other Batgirls have donned over time, it seems to echo a cosplay interpretation of the character. Compared to some of the more memorable costumes worn by Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain, it tends to be less impactful and somewhat forgettable.
3) Bombshells
The “Bombshells” series showcased alternate versions of several DC Comics’ female characters, such as Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and even Batgirl, portrayed by Barbara Gordon. Notably, her costume in this series was distinct with its gold and purple color scheme, including combat boots and an aviator-style mask. This suit, while sexier compared to some of Batgirl’s other costumes, is less iconic and tends to be among the more easily forgotten outfits she has worn.
2) Stephanie Brown
Stephanie Brown, commonly recognized as Spoiler and briefly as Robin, also donned the Batgirl role for a while. During this stint, she sported a distinctive purple suit, incorporating elements from her Spoiler outfit, making her distinct among other Batgirls. The costume boasted the iconic Bat symbol beloved by Batman enthusiasts, yet allowed her long, blonde hair to cascade like Barbara Gordon’s red tresses. The purple suit differed from other Batgirl versions, but lacked the same vibe that Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain had with their suits.
1) Original Silver Age
While many comic book enthusiasts typically associate Batgirl with Barbara Gordon or Cassandra Cain, another character temporarily took on the role before Barbara’s introduction during Batman’s Silver Age. This was Bette Kane, Kathy Kane’s niece and initially intended to be Robin’s love interest. Originally, Bette wore a costume similar to Robin’s, sporting a red top and green cape, but it didn’t last long as she later developed her iconic style. Although the coordinating costume with Robin was innovative at the time, it doesn’t resonate much today.
