The 6-Season Crime Series Returning In 2026 Beats Any Gangster Movie From The Past 15 Years

For the last fifteen years, the quality of TV shows has dramatically improved, becoming nearly equal to that of movies. This trend began a little before the rise of streaming services, with shows like Game of Thrones leading the way, and now many TV shows feature the same high production values – stunning visuals, famous actors, and epic storytelling – as blockbuster films.

Now it’s much simpler to compare movies and TV shows side-by-side. This is especially helpful when looking at the gangster genre, as there haven’t been many truly excellent gangster movies lately. In fact, the best example of the genre in recent years has been a six-season television show.

Peaky Blinders Is Better Than Any Gangster Movie From The Past 15 Years

Gangster movies aren’t made as often these days. Looking at the last fifteen years of Hollywood films, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman is probably the best example of the genre. However, another crime story featuring an Irish character is actually even more compelling.

I’ve been a huge fan of Peaky Blinders ever since it first aired on the BBC back in 2013. It was amazing to follow the Shelbys for six seasons, and I’m so excited to hear there’s a movie, The Immortal Man, coming out in March 2026! The show really reminded me of those classic gangster films – it’s a fantastic story about a really ambitious guy who isn’t afraid to bend the rules. Watching Tommy Shelby go from a small-time crook in Birmingham all the way to the top of the political world was incredible, and it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering if he’d make it or crash and burn.

The Shelby family in Peaky Blinders is full of fascinating, flawed people with complicated connections, and their stories are compelling to watch. Each season introduces even more powerful opponents (and occasional helpers) who challenge Tommy. A big part of what makes Peaky Blinders so good is its historical setting; the gritty streets of Birmingham feel like another character, and the dark, moody atmosphere perfectly matches the show’s unsettling tone.

Each season of Peaky Blinders is incredibly compelling, rivaling even the best gangster films. Over thirteen years, the show allows viewers to truly follow Tommy’s journey, feeling as though they’ve grown up alongside Cillian Murphy’s character. Unlike a typical movie, Peaky Blinders provides a remarkably detailed and complete portrayal of a mob boss, arguably the most thorough since Michael Corleone.

2026 Will Finally Cement Peaky Blinders Among The Gangster Genre’s Elite

Tommy Shelby, the main character in Peaky Blinders, is often compared to Tony Soprano, despite coming from a different time in television history. However, Peaky Blinders isn’t usually mentioned in the same breath as classic gangster films like Goodfellas, The Godfather, and The Departed. Considering how well-made it is, it absolutely should be considered among the greatest gangster stories ever told.

Although The Immortal Man is just one installment in the Shelby saga, its release will firmly establish Peaky Blinders as a major player in the gangster film genre. If it lives up to the standard of the original series, it could even surpass The Irishman as the best modern gangster movie. This would open the door for Peaky Blinders to be mentioned alongside the greatest films in the genre – a place it always had the potential to reach.
