The 7 Best Batman Gadgets

Batman is famous for always being ready for anything, thanks to his incredible collection of gadgets. He plans for every possibility, even if it means going up against his allies, which, while making him a questionable friend, adds to his compelling character. He truly has a tool for every situation, from classic equipment to highly specialized devices. He’s never caught off guard, so let’s revisit some of his very best gadgets.

When we put this list together, there were lots of Batman gadgets we could have included. However, we believe these are the most important and iconic tools he uses. While the *Absolute Batman* collection likely features even more unusual items, these gadgets really define the character.

7) The Thrasher Suit

It might be a bit of a stretch to call it a simple gadget, but Batman’s giant mech suit definitely fits the bill when you consider its purpose. The Thrasher suit, featured in the comics by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, is incredibly impressive. It proved invaluable in critical situations, like when the Court of Owls attacked the Batcave. Combined with freezing temperatures, it was a powerful weapon against the nearly-undead assassins.

I haven’t seen this in ages, but I’m really hoping it makes a comeback. It would definitely be useful in a brawl against someone like Bane or Killer Croc, depending on how powerful they get. Or, you know, if DC ever gets overrun by vampires or zombies *again*. It’s a great display of Batman being ready for anything, but it’s not *the* greatest example – the really amazing one is coming up next.

6) Smoke Bomb

One of Batman’s most reliable tools is the classic smoke bomb. A staple of his utility belt, they’re incredibly useful, particularly in the *Arkham* games, allowing for quick escapes. Smoke bombs serve multiple purposes – from stealth and evasion to creating dramatic distractions – and while not unique to Batman, they’re just as crucial to his crime-fighting as they are to anyone else who uses them. It’s hard to imagine Batman operating without them, and fans wouldn’t want it any other way.

5) Kryptonite Ring

Perhaps the most famous example of Batman’s planning is his Kryptonite ring – or simply carrying a piece of Kryptonite with him. This is designed to stop Superman if he’s mind-controlled or goes temporarily bad. While it won’t defeat Superman completely, it will definitely surprise him and, more importantly, prevent a destructive rampage.

This isn’t powerful enough to defeat a Superman like the one in *Injustice*, but it has its uses. It would fit perfectly into the story of *Batman: Hush*. Though it seems more like something Lex Luthor would use, he can’t risk losing it, so it’ll likely remain safely stored with his other items, like lollipops, for a long time.

4) Shark Repellent Bat Spray

Batman’s Shark Repellent is the perfect illustration of his preparedness. What started as a joke in the 1966 *Batman* movie has surprisingly become official comic book canon in *Batman #135* (2023). It actually proved useful when battling a cosmic space shark – a truly unusual situation! Many fans, including myself, never thought this gadget would appear in the comics, but it was a welcome surprise. While it’s unlikely we’ll see it used again, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m proven wrong, especially with issue #1000 coming up and King Shark often appearing as a threat.

3) Bat-tle Axe

The latest addition to Batman’s arsenal is a detachable emblem battle-axe, and it’s pretty ridiculous. Some of us initially thought the size of the logo on it was over the top. Now it’s a weapon used against criminals, but it’s designed not to kill them – I’m thinking of that thug in issue #1, which is actually a good thing for Bruce Wayne.

This is one of the first gadgets we’ve seen from Absolute Batman, but I expect many more, and they’ll likely be even more outlandish. We were choosing between this and a pellet that creates hydrochloric acid, but this gadget is far more extreme. Interestingly, its size is comparable to an axe.

2) The Grappling Gun

Batman’s grappling gun is one of his most recognizable tools. It fires a hook that allows him to quickly ascend to rooftops or ledges. Originally just a simple hook, it was improved with a pressurized gun to launch it upwards. While primarily used for getting around, it’s even saved Batman from falling out of the Earth’s atmosphere – and I really miss the writer who came up with that storyline!

1) The Batarang

Besides the batarang, did Batman have any other good options? It’s arguably his best tool – a bat-shaped, bladed boomerang used to take down criminals. It’s become incredibly popular, appearing in movies, cartoons, games, and all sorts of collectibles. The batarang has changed over time, even being adapted into a gun-fired projectile, but it remains his most famous gadget, which is impressive considering he also has things like shark repellent.
