And beyond his abilities and leadership, Cyclops is also known for having some of the most memorable and iconic costumes in X-Men history.
The X-Men comics have featured incredibly talented artists, and many of them designed fantastic costumes for the team’s leader, Cyclops. While some of his outfits haven’t been great, others are truly iconic. Here are seven of the best Cyclops costumes in X-Men history – stunning looks for a legendary leader.
7) New X-Men Leathers
Many fans consider New X-Men to be the best X-Men iteration of the 21st century, despite criticism of the team’s black leather outfits. However, these costumes actually suited the team’s updated direction, and looked great on most of the members, particularly Cyclops. While yellow is traditionally his color, the black streamlined his appearance, making him resemble his old nickname, ‘Slim.’ The costume conveyed a sense of authority and perfectly captured Cyclops’s character – it’s a surprisingly good look that doesn’t get enough credit.
6) The Krakoa Era Costume
The Krakoa era brought big changes to the X-Men, including new costumes for many characters. These designs often drew inspiration from classic looks, and Cyclops’s costume was a prime example. It successfully updated his second costume, using a deep blue – almost black – with lighter blue accents as a nod to his original revolutionary suit. While with X-Factor for five years, he wore a few different costumes, but his best was a blue and white suit featuring a large white X and a skull cap. There were versions with and without the skull cap, but both looked great. It was a perfect Cyclops costume and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
2) Cyclops’s 2nd Costume
Cyclops started his career as a superhero wearing the original blue and yellow X-Men uniform, just like his teammates. When the team got new costumes, Cyclops stuck with the blue and yellow, refining it into a memorable look. The dark blue color, combined with the pirate-style gloves and boots, felt both modern and classic. This design became the foundation for almost all of his future costumes and remained his best look for many years, until it was surpassed in 1991.
1) The ’90s Jim Lee Costume
1991 was a big year for the X-Men. Chris Claremont, the writer of Uncanny X-Men, moved on, and a new X-Men series (Vol. 2) began, bringing back the original five team members. Artist Jim Lee redesigned many characters’ costumes, including Cyclops’. This new look became incredibly popular, selling eight million comics and becoming Cyclops’ most recognizable outfit, largely thanks to X-Men: The Animated Series. While it definitely feels like a product of the ’90s, the costume still looks great today, perfectly fitting Cyclops’ character.
