The 7 Most Heartbreaking Deaths in Spider-Man’s Life (and It’s Not Just Uncle Ben)

Among all Marvel Comics characters, none seems to endure as much hardship as Spider-Man. Most superheroes trace their origins back to a personal tragedy, and Spidey is no exception. The loss of his dear Uncle Ben, which occurred due to Peter Parker’s carelessness while he was out as Spider-Man, had a profound impact on him and shaped his future as a hero. His decisions and actions were guided by the values instilled in him by his uncle. However, it is often humorously noted that Marvel Comics writers seem to have an affinity for giving Spider-Man a raw deal – they seldom let him enjoy peace and consistently pile on adversities, even fatal ones, in his life.

Although not every death in Marvel Comics has had a lasting impact, the passing of these seven characters left an indelible mark on Spider-Man, contributing significantly to his development into the hero we know today.

7) Richard & Mary Parker

Peter Parker’s parents, Richard and Mary, passed away before his comic debut, leaving behind only their names for readers. For many years, Aunt May and Uncle Ben stood as his de facto parents in the comics. Marvel Comics later revealed that Richard and Mary had been CIA agents working with Nick Fury; they both perished in service. Fury’s interest in protecting Spider-Man stems from this connection. Despite the brief return of Richard and Mary as clones, it was clear they died early enough for Aunt May to become Peter’s most significant figure.

6) Harry Osborn

Initially, Peter Parker in the comics was a lonely outcast, lacking any close relationships. His life took a turn when he formed friendships at school – among them Gwen Stacy, his girlfriend, Harry Osborn, his best friend, and Mary Jane Watson. However, matters between Peter and Harry became fraught when Peter discovered that Harry’s father was the Green Goblin. This revelation led to Harry blaming Spider-Man for his dad’s death. As it turned out, knowing that Peter was Spider-Man, Harry eventually went insane, took on the mantle of the Green Goblin, and attempted to kill Peter. In a tragic twist, when Harry regained consciousness briefly to halt his attack and save Spider-Man, he paid the ultimate price with his own life. The ambulance ride where Harry died with Spider-Man by his side was deeply moving. One advantage of the One More Day retcon was that it brought Harry back to life, but his death left a lasting impact on Spider-Man for quite some time.

5) Jean DeWolff

One of the most renowned Spider-Man storylines is titled “The Death of Captain Jean DeWolff.” Generally speaking, Spider-Man didn’t have many police force friends, often facing unnecessary gunfire from cops. However, he found a true friend in Captain Jean DeWolff as they worked together to combat crime. Tragically, one day while apprehending muggers, Spider-Man was informed that Jean had been murdered. In his new symbiote suit (though unaware of its extraterrestrial nature), Spider-Man embarked on a mission to find the killer and seek justice for his lost friend. The murderer turned out to be Sin-Eater, who happened to be a cop and Jean’s former lover. This storyline underscores how complex and challenging Spider-Man’s life can be.

4) Captain George Stacy

Captain George Stacy served as a police captain, viewing Spider-Man as an out-of-control vigilante who needed to be stopped. However, their connection ran deeper than just professional disagreements; George was Gwen Stacy’s father, adding complexity to Spider-Man’s interactions with him. The police captain’s admiration for Spider-Man was never reciprocated, making their relationship strained.

Unfortunately, Captain Stacy’s life was cut short in an unexpected manner while he was battling Doctor Octopus. Loose bricks from a nearby building fell, putting a young girl in danger. In his final moments, the captain heroically shielded the child but was struck by the falling debris himself. As George lay dying, he asked Spider-Man – who knew him as Peter Parker – to protect Gwen.

The situation became particularly challenging for Spider-Man because he couldn’t fulfill Captain Stacy’s last request when Gwen herself later perished. This realization weighed heavily on Peter, as he felt he had failed this important man in his final hours.

3) Aunt May

In the Marvel Comics universe, Aunt May has tragically “passed away” on multiple occasions. However, the most poignant departure occurred in Amazing Spider-Man #400. Throughout this issue, Aunt May was unwell and battling health complications, with Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson by her side to provide comfort. As the story reached its climax, May expressed it was time to part ways and chose to spend her final moments with only Peter. When Peter quoted J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan to his aunt, urging her to fly towards the stars, it was heart-wrenchingly emotional. The sight of Ben Reilly, weeping outside the house, added even more pain. The funeral, where May’s tombstone read “She Taught Us Love,” stood beside Uncle Ben’s (“He Was Loved”), served as a fitting tribute to the profound loss. Marvel being Marvel, they eventually resurrected Aunt May, but the story was a powerful farewell and one of the best emotional moments in Spider-Man’s comic book history.

2) Gwen Stacy

In essence, Peter Parker’s love life has been consistently fraught with misfortune. Be it his secret identity as Spider-Man causing girlfriends to leave or betray him, or unfortunate circumstances leading to Mary Jane being taken from him by Mephisto, he struggles to maintain lasting relationships. One of the most heartbreaking instances occurred when Gwen Stacy lost her life in Peter’s arms. As Spider-Man, Peter discovered Norman Osborn was the Green Goblin and set out to ruin his life. In a chilling turn of events, Goblin kidnapped Gwen and took her to the Brooklyn Bridge, ultimately pushing her off the edge. Desperate to save her, Peter aimed a web to catch her fall, but tragically, it only tightened around her neck, causing instant death. This moment left an indelible scar on Spider-Man’s psyche, as he felt responsible for her demise and vowed never again to allow anyone else to meet such a fate, fueling his relentless pursuit of protecting others at all costs.

1) Uncle Ben

In his debut story in Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man experienced the saddest loss in his life. After acquiring his powers, Peter Parker sought fame and fortune instead of using them for responsibility. He neglected to stop a burglar, disregarding Uncle Ben’s advice that “with great power comes great responsibility.” Tragically, this same burglar returned to Peter’s home seeking hidden treasure, resulting in the death of Uncle Ben. When Spider-Man understood that his inaction led to his uncle’s demise, it shaped him into one of Marvel Comics’ most resolute and mournful superheroes.
