Since starting in 2012, A24 has become a major force in filmmaking. The studio focuses on original, artistic stories, leading to critically acclaimed films like Hereditary and Everything Everywhere All at Once. While many A24 movies are available on HBO Max, that’s about to change. With the addition of Marty Supreme on April 24th, viewers need to hurry if they want to catch A24’s lesser-known monster movie before it potentially leaves the platform.
A24’s 2016 horror film, The Monster, has largely faded from memory despite being a solid creature feature with an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie follows a troubled mother (Zoe Kazan) and her distant daughter (Ella Ballentine) who find themselves battling a terrifying creature after their car breaks down on a lonely road during a rainstorm. While well-made, it didn’t get a wide release and didn’t receive much attention. Currently available on HBO Max, The Monster will be removed from the platform on March 31st, leaving less than a day to stream it.
A24’s The Monster Is a Hidden Gem That Deserves More Attention
“The Monster” is a truly excellent, yet surprisingly overlooked, film – not just within A24’s catalog, but in the horror genre as a whole. It’s a powerful example of A24’s skill at blending horror with genuine emotional depth. More than a simple horror movie, it’s a character study that happens to feature a monster, which actually represents the mother’s own inner struggles. This slow-burn drama explores difficult themes like motherhood, childhood neglect, and the possibility of healing, and the actors – especially Kazan – deliver incredibly moving performances that make the film stand out from typical monster movies.
This movie expertly blends emotional depth with genuine horror. Though it focuses on character feelings, it doesn’t skimp on scares. Set mostly on a lonely nighttime road, it builds incredible tension and psychological fear, keeping you gripped. And the monster – a frightening, reptilian creature – is shown frequently and looks remarkably real thanks to impressive practical effects, making it truly terrifying.
Where to Stream A24’s The Monster After It Leaves HBO Max?
If you enjoy creature features or films from A24, don’t miss The Monster while it’s still on HBO Max. It’s not expected to be added to other major streaming services in April, meaning it will disappear from HBO Max on March 31st. After that, you’ll only be able to watch it by renting or buying it online.
