The Absolute Universe is a dark reflection of our own, where everything is wrong. Powerful, corrupt individuals and monstrous beings rule, and true heroism is rare and new. But the biggest difference lies in its Justice League – instead of being made up of the world’s best heroes, this League is formed by the worst villains. They believe heroes are the real problem, disrupting the natural order, and see themselves as saviors by trying to eliminate them. However, a true Justice League might finally be emerging to set things right.
The fifteenth issue of Absolute Wonder Woman brought together heroes from different series for the first time, pairing Wonder Woman and Batman to investigate a series of murders in Gotham connected to the goddess Hecate. This first part of a two-issue story proved that Wonder Woman and Batman work incredibly well as a team and hinted at the formation of a larger group, the Justice League. Both heroes have been operating solo for a while, and Wonder Woman believes it’s time they started working together.
An Absolute Team-Up to Set the Stage

I was so excited to see Wonder Woman team up with Batman! She went to Gotham because of these awful murders – each one marked with a symbol connected to the goddess Hecate. Batman was hesitant at first, but Wonder Woman quickly proved she was someone he could trust, and he agreed to help her investigate. Little did we know, it was a setup! They headed to Slaughter Swamp to check out the latest crime scene, right into a trap laid by the Joker and Veronica Cale. It turned out the symbol wasn’t used correctly – a real follower of Hecate would never do that. The trail led them to this creepy abandoned church, and what they found inside was horrifying – a bunch of witches were performing a spell, building this monster out of parts stolen from the victims’ bodies! It was a truly disturbing scene.
Wonder Woman was vulnerable to a golem control ritual because of her creation from clay, and the ritual nearly forced her to attack Batman. Though a skilled fighter, Batman was no match for her power. Just as she was about to deliver a fatal blow, he used a gift she’d given him to break her control. They both escaped the church as it exploded, realizing it was a trap. Resting in the snow, Wonder Woman pointed out they’d need to gather more allies if they hoped to save the world.
She gave him a flash drive created by the scientist she’d rescued from the maze in Area 41. It contained files on every hero in the world – not just the famous ones like Wonder Woman and Superman, but also heroes like Green Lantern and the Flash, and possibly others. Wonder Woman thinks they’ll all need to team up, and she believes she and Batman will become good friends eventually, even though they seem different now. She wanted him to figure this out on his own, so she gave him the drive and then wished him happy holidays with a smile.
The True Team of Heroes on the Horizon

This issue marked a significant moment – the first time heroes from the Absolute line teamed up. It also paved the way for future interactions between Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the hero group, essentially starting to build a superhero community. We’ll likely see more heroes connecting, starting with partnerships between just two at a time. While a three-hero team-up featuring the Absolute Trinity seems inevitable, they’ll probably meet and work with each other one-on-one before joining forces as a full group.
Currently, the heroes of the Absolute Universe are fragmented and working in isolation. This aligns with the universe’s theme of heroism existing as small, localized rebellions within a vast system. Unlike the villains, who have abundant resources and numerous allies, the heroes are limited in their reach and influence. This makes it crucial – but incredibly difficult – for them to unite. Even if they do, they wouldn’t have the same public backing or institutional power as the established Justice League; they’d be considered outlaws without any official support.
They aren’t even close to being a real team yet, let alone the Justice League – the name is already taken, and they’re currently just individuals working separately. They need to learn to cooperate and understand how to fight together against their enemies. This is just the first step on what will probably be a long journey to becoming the Justice League. They might eventually earn the name, or perhaps adopt the name of an old enemy team. While they probably won’t choose a name like the Injustice League or the Legion of Doom, they’ll most likely come up with something entirely new.
