Following two straight seasons, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 reached its exhilarating end. The second season was significantly more gripping than the first, showcasing a progressive deepening of the bond between characters Jinshi and Maomao. Nevertheless, the central theme of the second season, particularly the latter half, revolved around the Shi Clan’s uprising masterminded by Shenmei, the wife of the Shi Clan leader. Now, Jinshi has assumed his responsibilities as the Moon Prince and acknowledged his true self as Ka Zuigetsu, the Imperial brother. On a different note, Maomao, who was abducted by Suirei during the latter half of the second season, is now back with Jinshi.
Regardless of its outcome, the Shi Clan’s uprising would have been quelled; however, Loulan’s involvement significantly simplified matters for Jinshi. He successfully seized the fortress without any losses, and his troops seemed to effortlessly eliminate Shishou. Contrarily, Shenmei attempted to slay her own offspring, an action that rebounded against her as Loulan had foreseen this. Unfortunately, Loulan’s actions were unable to absolve her of the charges for deserting her post at the Rear Palace and being a member of the Shi Clan. Before causing harm to Jinshi, she begged for Suirei’s protection. Loulan’s tragic yet stunning denouement brings closure to the rebellion, leaving us curious about the future of the primary characters. The official anime website has announced a sequel along with a preview trailer, but we currently have only this information.
The Apothecary Diaries Confirms a Sequel With a Teaser Trailer
The specific structure of the upcoming installment is yet unclear, leaving us uncertain about whether it will be another season or a movie based on the original story. The second series was modeled after volumes 3 and 4 from the manga, mirroring the style of the initial season. Following the Shi Clan’s uprising, both Jinshi’s and Maomao’s lives have undergone significant changes. Given his new responsibilities as an Imperial brother, Jinshi must adjust, while Maomao is compelled to go back to the Verdigris House due to her inability to work at the palace anymore. The official website has made an announcement about the sequel, which includes a message from the author, Natsu Hyuuga, and the voice actors of the anime series.
Hyuuga expresses his gratitude for the decision to continue the story, but also shares that he feels quite pressured because the initial plan was for only four novels and now there will be more content required to make the sequel even more engaging.
Even though specifics about the sequel are still under wraps, we can anticipate some fresh developments within a few months. The first season premiered in Fall 2023 and the second one started broadcasting in Winter 2025, suggesting that the wait for the sequel may not be prolonged. The trailer hints at the mystery deepening as Jinshi and Maomao join forces once more. Loulan gives him a note suggesting potential events unfolding in the nation. Furthermore, this popular duo will collaborate to uncover the enigma surrounding the “damage” afflicting the northern farming villages.
