Fans of The Apothecary Diaries have a lot to look forward to! A third season of the anime is on its way, split into two parts. The first part will premiere in October of this year, and the second is planned for Spring 2024. A brand-new movie, written by the author of the original novels, Natsu Hyuuga, will be released in Japanese theaters this December, with international dates to be announced. While waiting for the anime’s return, a recipe book based on the series will be released in Japan on May 13th, 2026, with a possible global release to follow. The book features an adorable cover illustrated by Touko Shino and lets fans recreate the dishes mentioned in the story.
This cookbook was developed with guidance from Hyuuga and features 23 recipes seen in the story, including the chocolate love potion Maomao makes. It also contains six original short stories by Hyuuga, each with a new recipe. Remarkably, according to Mantan Web, the book is already being reprinted before its official release due to overwhelming pre-order demand. Its popularity has clearly exceeded expectations, given the series’ existing fanbase.
What to Expect From The Apothecary Diaries Season 3

Details about the new season are scarce since an official trailer hasn’t been released yet. The story will follow Jinshi as she continues to ask Maomao to investigate puzzling cases throughout the kingdom. The first part of the season will likely cover the events of the fifth book, introducing new obstacles for Jinshi and Maomao in the northern farming communities.
Jinshi and the other character are growing closer, now that Jinshi feels comfortable being himself. Meanwhile, the balance of power in the Palace is changing following the birth of Gyokuyou’s son, who will inherit the title of Crown Prince – a title that previously belonged to Jinshi. The story will also reveal the hidden truth about Jinshi’s origins.
The Apothecary Diaries Will Bring Maomao and Jinshi Closer

The relationship between Maomao and Jinshi developed significantly in the second season, particularly towards the end when Maomao discovered Jinshi’s secret. She learned that he was actually Ka Zuigetsu, the Moon Prince, and that he had been pretending to be an eunuch to avoid involvement in palace power struggles and the complex question of who would inherit the throne. He had been kidnapped by the Shi Clan, and his disguise was a way to stay hidden.
Maomao’s kidnapping was a turning point, and Jinshi realized he had to lead the fight against the Clan. After quickly defeating the Shi Clan, he stepped up to fulfill his royal responsibilities. Meanwhile, with Concubine Gyokuyou’s son now born, Maomao left the palace, as she no longer had any reason to remain.
Maomao’s adoptive father was officially employed as a doctor at the Rear Palace, and she started working as an apothecary at the Verdigris House. Even though they’re currently apart, Jinshi still makes time to see her when he can. If you’re looking forward to the new season and movie, you can rewatch the first two anime seasons on Crunchyroll.
