After releasing Chapter 80 in April 2025, the popular manga “The Apothecary Diaries” took a break from its regular monthly schedule. This hiatus was due to various challenges faced by the series’ artist, Nekokurage, including tax evasion charges and health issues that lasted for several months. Fortunately, Nekokurage will not serve prison time as long as she avoids further legal troubles and keeps her taxes up-to-date following a large fine. Despite these difficulties, she has continued to work on the manga, but concerns about her health eventually led her to take a much-needed break this year. Currently, the story in the manga is still unfolding during the Shi Clan’s rebellion, which means that the anime adaptation is currently ahead in terms of the plot.
The anime adaptation of “The Apothecary Diaries” novel by Natsu Hyuuga is self-contained, meaning it doesn’t rely on the manga for sources. The second season wrapped up, adapting content from the fourth novel volume, while the manga is still ongoing during the Shi Clan’s rebellion. Post the Season 2 finale, an announcement trailer confirmed a sequel. Moving forward, the story will delve into mysteries in a Northern farming village of the kingdom, with Jinshi and Maomao leading the way. Although specifics about the sequel are yet to be disclosed, fans can follow along with the manga series as it’s anticipated to resume its regular publication schedule.
What Is Happening in The Apothecary Diaries Manga?
In the last chapter, Maomao was left in shock when Loulan revealed the unconscious children, who had unknowingly consumed poison at Maomao’s hand. As a result, the girls must now resort to extreme measures, given the gravity of the situation and their own lives being on the line. Simultaneously, Jinshi follows Lakan’s advice by spearheading the battle against the Shi Clan, engaging in strategic discussions with both Lakan and himself. With the clock ticking, Lakan seems increasingly frantic to save Maomao while everyone else works diligently to keep him composed.
For the first time in the manga, I’m left speechless by the stunning debut of Jinshi in his armored attire, expertly crafted by Nekokurage with an attention to detail that surpasses even the anime version. It’s like Hyuuga himself brought Jinshi to life on the pages, such is the precision and authenticity of the illustration. What’s more intriguing, though, is the secret persona Jinshi has been hiding beneath this armor for years – a royal figure on the run from his duties, concealing himself from the public eye under the guise of an eunuch. Absolutely fascinating!
He realizes now that he can no longer portray the character of an eunuch, yet he’s prepared to step out of his familiar surroundings to save Maomao and quell the rebellion. We catch a glimpse into the hardships experienced by Shi Clan Head, Shishou, who has been grappling with difficulties for years as a result of Shenmei’s actions. It is now time for one of the kingdom’s mightiest clans to be dismantled, and Jinshi stands ready with the royal forces at his disposal.
