The Apothecary Chronicles concluded its second season in July 2025 following a lengthy conflict against the Shi Clan, one of the most influential clans in the kingdom. After their rebellion was unsuccessful and crushed, their assets were seized by the Imperial family for better use. Following his revelation of his true identity, Jinshi is no longer able to continue working in the Rear Palace as a eunuch, instead assuming his official duties as the Imperial Brother. Meanwhile, Maomao has joined the Verdigris House as an apothecary while her adoptive father, Luomen, returns to work at the Rear Palace as a physician.
The anime has officially announced a new installment, as hinted by a trailer, although no additional information about it has been shared so far. What format this sequel will take (such as Season 3) remains unclear, given the announcement merely used the term “sequel.” Since the anime has finished adapting the novel up to Volume 4, the upcoming content will be based on events starting from Volume 5. The teaser trailer suggests that Maomao and Jinshi are planning a trip to the Northern farming villages, where it appears there may be significant turmoil. As fans eagerly await this sequel, the anime’s official website has been updated with another stunning visual.
The Apothecary Diaries Shares New Look of Maomao and Kyou-u
In July 2024, the Four Seasons Initiative commenced as a marketing effort showcasing stunning images of beloved characters alongside various plants representing each season. The main website unveiled fresh images on the 22nd day of every month, ending in June 2025. Throughout this endeavor, the plant life was the central element and was consistently associated with the seasons. Initially, the emphasis was solely on characters hailing from the Rear Palace, such as Jinshi, Xiaolan, Shisui (Loulan), Lihua, Gyokoyou, and her daughter Lingli.
Instead of just one promo, the anime came back in July with another installment, this time spotlighting lesser-known characters from the Verdigris House. The visual released in July shows Maomao and Pairin lounging in a gazebo following a hot bath at the Verdigris House, enjoying a tranquil summer evening filled with bellflowers and fireflies. In this new installment, attention shifts to Maomao and Kyou-u, who are depicted picking summer produce such as watermelon, tomatoes, corn, and eggplant from the garden.
As Kyou-u leisurely spends his time, Maomao is diligently laboring under the intense summer heat. Originally a member of the Shi Clan, Kyou-u (now known as Chou-u for safety reasons) found companionship with Maomao after she was abducted by Suirei. Following the failure of a rebellion, he was given a resurrection drug by Loulan, but this left him with no memory of his past life. Due to certain circumstances, he doesn’t reside with the other children under Ah-Duo’s care. Instead, he lives in the Verdigris House under Maomao’s protection, unaware of his former life.
