The Apothecary Diaries Shares New Look After Heartbreaking Season 2 Finale

In Season 2 of “The Apothecary Diaries,” the narrative didn’t just delve into Jinshi and Maomao’s growing bond, but also introduced a new character, Shisui, who was a girl around Maomao’s age. Shisui, with her lively spirit, quickly captivated viewers in the first episode of Season 2. She easily meshed with Maomao and other young girls, Xiaolan, who were working at the Rear Palace. Despite Shisui’s eccentricities sometimes causing friction for Maomao, the three girls generally got along well. However, what no one anticipated was that Shisui was actually Loulan, the daughter of the prestigious Shi Clan and the newly appointed Pure Consort.

The animated series followed the first four books of the novel, highlighting the Shi Clan’s uprising and significant contributions from characters like Maomao and Loulan. Loulan, knowing her end was near, took every measure to safeguard the children of the Shi Clan, eventually entrusting them to Maomao before parting ways. Despite the grim circumstances, she displayed immense courage and resilience until the very end. The fact that she miraculously survived was largely due to a hairpin placed by Maomao close to her body.

Anime Expo 2025 Shares Stunning Visual of Maomao and Shisui

Every summer for more than three decades, California hosts the biggest annual anime convention known as Anime Expo. This year’s event took place from July 3rd to 6th and included a panel for “The Apothecary Diaries,” where voice actors were also involved. During this panel, ComicBook was present, distributing physical copies of an exclusive illustration. The artwork depicts a touching moment between the characters Shisui and Maomao; in it, Shisui is trying to give Maomao a hug while she smiles at her playful antics.

Asami Seto, Loulan’s voice actress, mentioned that Shisui will be the one giving her a warm embrace, yet Nekoneko is also not undesirable. It’s adorable to see her considering this as a pleasant scenario.

Aoi Yuki, who voices Maomao, also mentioned, “In Japanese, we describe Nekoneko’s expression as ‘somewhat agreeable,’ chuckling.

Unlike the pleasant appearance of the final scene, the second season’s conclusion was actually quite heart-wrenching. Although the Imperial family successfully defeated the Shi Clan with minimal losses, and Loulan miraculously survived a gunshot wound, things weren’t as rosy for Maomao. She found herself filled with regret over her parting with Loulan. Despite spending considerable time with Shisui, she was still taken aback when she discovered his true identity. It’s hard to believe that a genius like Maomao wouldn’t have any doubts, but she didn’t want the revelation to be accurate. After the rebellion ended, she couldn’t help but feel remorseful for not having fully understood Shisui earlier.

In a moment of contemplation, Maomao struggled with labeling Shisui as a friend, recognizing that this term best encapsulated their bond. A small glimmer of hope lingered within her heart, suggesting that perhaps Shisui might have survived, but the truth remained elusive. Whatever the outcome concerning Shisui’s life, it was certain that Maomao would never again share moments with her dear friend. Shisui adopted a new persona and embarked on a journey to cross the vast ocean, leaving behind a sorrowful and tearful Maomao.
