The anime series The Apothecary Diaries, based on Natsu Hyuga’s popular novels, finished its second season in July. Immediately after the finale, a sequel was announced with a short teaser, but no release date was given. In October 2025, to celebrate the series’ second anniversary, it was revealed that a third season will be split into two parts. The first part is scheduled for Fall 2026, likely in early to mid-October, and the second will arrive in Spring 2027 after a short break over the winter. Perhaps the biggest news was the announcement of a brand-new movie with a story written by the novel’s author.
The new anime is scheduled to premiere in Japan in December of next year, but a release date for other countries hasn’t been announced yet. Fans are thrilled about what’s coming next, as the story is becoming increasingly captivating. The first two seasons covered the first four volumes of the original light novel series, and Season 3 will start with Volume 5, following Jinshi and Maomao as they team up to investigate strange events. Details about the plot of the upcoming movie are still unknown. As excitement builds, the voice actors for Maomao and Jinshi have been sharing their expectations.
The Apothecary Diaries Stars Hype the Original Film

Mantan Web published an interview with Aoi Yuki, the voice of Maomao, and Takeo Otsuka, who voices Jinshi. Both actors admitted they don’t know much more about the project than the fans, but expressed their enthusiasm for this fresh, new endeavor.
Yuki explained that while the first two seasons of the anime carefully adapted the original story, the new movie has a completely original plot created by the author, Natsu-sensei, specifically with animation in mind. They don’t have many details yet, but are excited to see what new secrets the movie will reveal about Nekoneko.
Otsuka also announced a release plan for The Apothecary Diaries: the first part of the third season will come out in October 2026, with a movie following in December, and the second part of the third season in April 2027. This means fans will be able to enjoy the complete story continuously, which Otsuka excitedly called “amazing!”
He also mentioned that the announcement video for the sequel contains clues about what’s to come. He explained that the visuals used for both the third season and the movie announcements were intentionally designed to hint at the movie’s story. He encourages fans to analyze Nekoneko’s facial expressions and the imagery of flickering flames to form their own theories.
As of December 2025, the novel spans 16 volumes after eleven years of publication, and fans are eagerly anticipating what happens next. The third season of the anime will follow Maomao and Jinshi as they travel to the northern farming villages, where a new mystery unfolds and Jinshi once again needs Maomao’s assistance to solve it. In the meantime, you can enjoy the first two seasons of the anime on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
