The Archers stars David and William Troughton talk being father and son in iconic radio soap and in real-life

Since 2014, David Troughton and his son, William, have portrayed father and son characters, Tony and Tom, on the radio drama The Archers. Interestingly, David is the son of the second actor to play Doctor Who, Patrick Troughton, making William his grandson.

As father and son, is it easier to play that relationship?

It was strange at first, considering Tom and Tony don’t have a good relationship. Tony is still grieving for his son, John, and Tom has always felt he couldn’t measure up to him.

WILLIAM: Tom’s constantly chasing his father’s praise, wanting him to be proud of him…

DAVID: And that is so unlike our real relationship.

William said it truly is a great time, and he’s really enjoying spending it with his dad. He feels it’s especially meaningful because it’s just the two of them, away from the rest of the family.

Does that make other family members feel a bit jealous?

DAVID: They’re probably thankful not to be part of Tony and Tom!

William explained that he doesn’t have any competition because his brother, Sam, is an actor, and another friend, Jim, plays cricket. They’re all in different fields.

DAVID: That’s performing, too. It has to be in the genes.

Have any of your storylines made you gasp?

DAVID: When I played Bottom at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1989, I had a stage mishap where I accidentally stabbed myself. Someone in the audience shouted, “Bye bye, Mr Dad!” It was actually quite touching.

WILLIAM: Growing up watching you die – not the most usual of childhoods.

David, have you ever given William any acting advice?

When we began, I offered some guidance on using the microphone. Performing on stage involves making eye contact, but in radio, you treat the microphone as if it’s the person you’re speaking to. I’m often told I’m too loud, but as a stage actor, I’m used to projecting my voice to reach everyone in the audience. I just naturally like to be expressive and project a lot of energy.

WILLIAM: I’m constantly being told to quiet down, too.

Any dream storylines?

WILLIAM: I want us to fall out. Furiously. Big argument. Conflict!

DAVID: Yes, nobody wants to listen to us being happy. We need crises!

What would you give each other for Christmas, in character?

WILLIAM: Tony likes his train set, so something for that.

DAVID: Something for his tractor.

WILLIAM: Tom’s constantly searching for acceptance, so maybe just a “Well done, son” would do.

How about in real life?

DAVID: We do a Secret Santa, because it got too expensive.

WILLIAM: I’d give you a gadget, you like those.

DAVID: I gave you a drone last year – you’ve not used it once!

WILLIAM: Still a sore point, is it?

DAVID: It is!
