The Avengers and the X-Men are Marvel’s two most well-known teams, with each being the more popular one depending on the time period. While they seem quite different – and rarely share members, though a few mutants have appeared with the Avengers – the two groups have even clashed on occasion. Generally, they operate independently. However, characters like Wolverine and Storm have been part of both teams. Today, we’re focusing on a character who was an original member of the X-Men and a long-standing Avenger.
Most fans know Beast as one of the original X-Men and a brilliant mind, but he spent over six years as a core member of the Avengers, starting with issue #137 and continuing until issue #211, when he moved on to the Defenders. After decades focused solely on the X-Men, it’s time for Beast to return to the Avengers. The timing is perfect because there are two Beasts needing help: a clone grappling with the consequences of the original’s darker choices, and the original Beast himself, who needs to be reminded of what it means to be a hero.
Beast, the Happiest Avenger

Beast has a unique connection with the Avengers. While he’s a valuable member of the X-Men, his relationship with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is distinct and beneficial for both sides. With the Avengers, Beast can truly be himself in a way he can’t with the X-Men. As an X-Man, he’s seen as the team’s dependable super-scientist, constantly called upon to solve mutantkind’s biggest crises – often involving threats of extinction – with logical, practical solutions.
Dealing with the constant difficulties faced alongside the X-Men caused Beast to suppress his cheerful personality. He became distant, serious, and emotionally closed off. The ongoing pressure and dangers gradually eroded his principles, leading to a decline in his character. This contrasts sharply with his time with the Avengers, where he could rely on other brilliant minds like Iron Man or Ant-Man to share the intellectual burden. Having that support allowed Beast to relax and express his more playful side.
Beast is a naturally funny and lighthearted character, but when he’s with the X-Men, he’s usually preoccupied with just trying to survive and solve problems in his own unique way. Being around others who understand him and share his intelligence allows Beast to relax and enjoy himself. Though he’ll always cherish the X-Men as his family, it was the Avengers who really let his personality shine.
A Reminder of Simpler Days

Beast’s experience with the Avengers has been more positive partly because they face less prejudice and violence directed at mutants compared to the X-Men. His adventures with the Avengers are generally more straightforwardly heroic and upbeat, which is exactly what he needs at the moment. The clone of Beast is still worried about becoming like the original, so being around the Avengers and being treated as one of Earth’s greatest heroes is a much-needed boost for his confidence. Considering Beast struggles with self-doubt, the Avengers are well-positioned to help him feel better about himself.
While the original Beast is believed to be deceased, recent clues suggest he’s back and involved in the “Age of Revelation.” This Beast is a true villain, making the Avengers’ involvement crucial. They have the potential to help him remember who he once was, before things went wrong. By offering support and reminding him he’s not facing his problems alone, they could guide him toward a path of redemption. Although he may resist their help now, he desperately needs it.
