As a huge fan of The Batman, I was excited to hear that one of the villains from the first movie will be back for The Batman – Part II. Apparently, they won’t have as large a role this time around, which is interesting. With so many compelling characters introduced in Matt Reeves’ initial film, everyone’s been wondering who the main villain will be in the sequel, and we’re starting to get some hints about who might show up!
Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oz Cobb, a.k.a. the Penguin, in The Batman 2, but his part will be smaller than it was in the first movie. He revealed this while promoting his film The Ballad of a Small Player at the Zurich Film Festival, adding that he’s pleased with the amount he’s involved and has already read the entire script.
My part in this movie is even smaller than before, but that’s fine with me. I’ve already read the entire script.
The Penguin, like villains such as the Riddler and Carmine Falcone, became a major criminal in Gotham after initially working for the Falcone family and building his own reputation. Despite this, Colin Farrell’s return to the role may not have as significant an impact as some fans hoped, especially after his limited appearance in the first film.
Colin Farrell’s Penguin appeared in only about ten minutes of footage in the 2022 film The Batman, despite the actor being an Oscar nominee. While he hasn’t revealed how much screen time he has in the sequel, it appears he may have even less than he did in the first movie.
Matt Reeves is returning to direct the sequel to The Batman, which will also be the first film in DC Studios’ new ‘Elseworlds’ series. The movie is anticipated to star Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Barry Keoghan as Bruce Wayne faces new threats in a Gotham City struggling with massive flooding. The Batman – Part II is currently scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
The Penguin’s Expected Role in The Batman 2

Although Matt Reeves has dismissed many possible villains for The Batman 2, Colin Farrell’s Penguin will definitely appear. However, he’s only expected to be in the movie for a short time, so viewers might only get a brief look at his activities in Gotham within the larger story.
So, Reeves has hinted at something really interesting with the next villain – he says we’ve genuinely never seen this type of bad guy on screen before. That immediately got me thinking – forget the usual suspects like the Joker or Riddler. It sounds like Batman is about to face a threat totally unlike anything we’ve seen in previous Batman films, and honestly, I’m really excited to see how that plays out.
Keanu Reeves has stated his next Batman film will be groundbreaking, featuring a story with completely fresh and original ideas that haven’t been explored like this before.
Details about the plot are being kept secret until filming starts in early 2026, but DC fans can expect a very different and exciting Batman story when the sequel arrives.
