HBO’s series *The Penguin*, which expanded the world of Gotham City, was a critical and popular success. A major highlight was Cristin Milioti’s performance as Sofia Falcone, which earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. Her portrayal quickly made Sofia a beloved character, leading many to believe she might appear in the upcoming movie, *The Batman – Part II*. However, director Matt Reeves has confirmed that Milioti will not be returning as Sofia for the sequel.
Director Matt Reeves confirmed that Cristin Milioti won’t appear in *The Batman – Part II*. He explained that the script was already well-developed by the time they considered her, but praised her performance in *The Penguin* series as ‘astonishing.’ Reeves highlighted the fantastic work of showrunner Lauren LeFranc in developing the character and expressed enthusiasm about potentially working with Milioti in the future, though not for this particular film because the story was too far along in development.
Although Sofia Falcone wasn’t in the latest show, her story still allows for her return in future DC projects. The finale revealed she’s Selina Kyle (Catwoman)’s half-sister, creating a strong link between the characters and opening possibilities for them to team up – perhaps in a Catwoman spin-off or another series. Director Matt Reeves wants to expand his Batman universe, and given the positive response to Sofia Falcone, it’s likely we’ll see the character again, even if it’s after the next Batman movie.
DC Studios Is Developing Another Take on Batman
Matt Reeves is still creating his own Batman story, separate from the main DC Universe, as an independent series. However, DC Studios is also developing its own Batman for the core DC Universe. This new Batman will first appear in a movie called *The Brave and the Bold*, which will introduce an older Bruce Wayne and reveal he has a son, Damian, who was raised by assassins. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the film will be inspired by a famous Batman comic book series and will include other members of the Batman family. Having two different live-action Batmen at the same time has sparked debate among fans, but it allows for two very different versions of the character: one as a realistic, gritty detective, and the other as an experienced hero in a more fantastical setting.
Work on *The Batman – Part II* is moving forward as planned, with the script finished and filming scheduled to start in spring 2026. The movie faced some setbacks during development, which caused delays and even sparked false rumors about it being canceled. Director Matt Reeves initially planned a three-movie series, and while he still hopes to complete the trilogy, changes at DC Studios and the long wait between films have made the third movie less definite. Now that DC is concentrating on creating a shared universe, whether or not we see more stories set in Gotham after *Part II* will likely depend on how well these films – and any potential spin-off shows or movies – perform.
The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.
