As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham City, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia seeing two Irish talents like Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan joining forces to bring the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery to life. It’s not every day that you see your fellow countrymen standing opposite Bruce Wayne on the big screen, especially when those characters are as iconic as The Penguin and The Joker.
In the latest movie “The Batman,” released in 2022, Robert Pattinson portrayed Batman who faced off against Paul Dano as The Riddler. At the same time, the characters Catwoman (played by Zoe Kravitz) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell) were also introduced as potential future threats. Towards the end of the film, Matt Reeves hinted at Batman’s most iconic enemy, The Joker, by subtly revealing Barry Keoghan in the role. It is yet to be determined how significant The Joker’s involvement was before his incarceration in Arkham Asylum; however, the actor portraying him is already familiar with the larger cast of this Batman saga.
Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan’s Batman Saga Parallels
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate the moment when Penguin and Joker share the silver screen together. Interestingly enough, the talented actors behind these iconic characters, hailing from the Emerald Isle, have already had some intriguing conversations about their intertwined universe.
During an interview at the premiere of “The Batman” at “The Penguin” in New York City, lead actor Colin Farrell shared that he and fellow star Barry Keoghan found humor in their roles within the grand scheme of “The Batman Epic Crime Saga.
Farrell commented, ‘We shared a hearty chuckle over it.’ He referred to himself as The Joker and his companion as The Penguin, both hailing from the northern part of Dublin. It’s strange yet charming, and it leaves you feeling slightly elated. You simply find yourself laughing about it, recognizing your good fortune.
Over the past several years, the acting journeys of Farrell and Keoghan have been remarkably similar, albeit separated by 17 years. They made their on-screen debut together in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” (2017), and more recently in “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022). Remarkably, both films earned them Academy Award nominations.
The duo, Farrell and Keoghan, donning costumes to play antagonists to Batman, follows a trend of Irish actors facing off against Bruce Wayne in major film productions. In the Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Cillian Murphy from Cork played Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) across all films, while Liam Neeson, hailing from Northern Ireland, appeared as Ra’s Al Ghul in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises.
It’s unclear when Keoghan’s Joker will fully appear in the grand crime saga known as “The Batman”. After the release of “The Batman”, director Matt Reeves posted a deleted scene on social media, showing Batman interrogating the character, suggesting that the Joker may have found a way to break out of Arkham Asylum.
In a recent interview, Keoghan stated, “I don’t have much to share right now. We’ll just have to wait and see. It was truly an amazing journey.
The Penguin premieres on Max on Thursday, September 19th.
