The Batman Part 2’s New Working Title Hints At Historic Villain

The sequel to The Batman is moving forward with a working title that suggests it will feature a villain not yet seen on screen. Director Matt Reeves finished the script with co-writer Mattson Tomlin last summer, and the film is on track for release on October 1, 2027. Filming is scheduled to start soon, bringing Robert Pattinson back as Batman to investigate a new murder mystery. However, the identity of the villain remains a secret, kept under wraps by Reeves and DC Studios.

A recent report from North Hollywood Buzz indicates that production for The Batman: Part 2 is scheduled to begin on May 29th. The film is currently known under the working title Semper Vigilans, a Latin phrase meaning “always vigilant” or “always watchful.” This title could hint at clues about the sequel’s villain and overall story.

This is the second working title for the upcoming The Batman sequel. It was previously known as Vengeance 2, following the original film which was temporarily called Vengeance during development.

Okay, so the internet exploded a bit when Semper Vigilans dropped, and honestly, everyone’s convinced we’re getting the Court of Owls as the big bad in The Batman: Part 2. For those who don’t know, this group is seriously creepy – basically, Gotham’s oldest, wealthiest families secretly running the city from the shadows since the very beginning. They’ve been pulling strings with money and, let’s just say, persuasion – including murder – to control everything from politics to business. It’s a fantastic, shadowy conspiracy, and if they go with it, it could be a really compelling villain for Batman to face.

Introducing the Court of Owls in “The Batman 2” would be a major event. While the group has appeared in the “Gotham” and “Gotham Knights” TV series, Batman hasn’t faced them yet in a live-action film.

While most people in Gotham don’t know about this group, rumors and old stories suggest its existence—even mentioning a ‘Court of Owls’ that ‘watches all time,’ a phrase remarkably similar to ‘always watchful.’

The Court of Owls is always watching over Gotham, secretly controlling the city from hidden locations. They observe everything you do – at home, even while you sleep. Don’t even mention their name, or they’ll send their deadly assassin, the Talon, after you.

Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman 2, has stated that the film’s villain will be someone audiences haven’t seen portrayed on screen before. This effectively eliminates popular guesses like Harvey Dent (Two-Face), as that role will be filled by Sebastian Stan.

The Court of Owls, a relatively recent addition to Batman lore created by Scott Snyder in 2011, hasn’t yet appeared in any movies or TV shows. However, that might be changing soon. The organization was already hinted at in The Batman, and its focus on deep-rooted corruption in Gotham made it a natural fit for the film series.

The Court of Owls Is the Missing Piece in The Batman 2’s Dent Mystery

With Sebastian Stan set to play Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson as his wife, Gilda, The Batman 2 is now reportedly looking for an actor to play Harvey’s father, Christopher. Harvey’s dad, who is described as an abusive alcoholic, is expected to have a significant part in the sequel, and filmmakers are hinting at a compelling reason for his inclusion in the story.

In past DC Comics stories, Harvey Dent’s father was depicted as a politician struggling with alcohol and gambling. He was shown to be abusive, deciding with a flipped coin whether to harm his son. Given his wealth, influence, and age within Gotham City, he’s now a likely candidate to be involved with, or even lead, the secretive Court of Owls.

There’s a lot of talk that Gilda Dent, in the next Batman movie, might become a dangerous villain, potentially as one of the Court of Owls’ deadly assassins, Talon. If Harvey Dent discovers his wife and father are involved in Gotham’s corruption, it could push him over the edge.

These new discoveries, along with a devastating injury, could turn Stan’s Harvey Dent into the iconic villain Two-Face. This would likely happen in a potential The Batman: Part 3, and portray him as a particularly sympathetic and tragic character.
