The Batman Part II’s Biggest Character Absence Could Actually Be a Good Thing

There’s been another cast update for The Batman Part II, but it’s not entirely bad news. The sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022) will bring back Robert Pattinson as Batman, along with Andy Serkis as Alfred, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. Scarlett Johansson is also joining the cast, though her role is currently a secret. While details about the plot are still being kept quiet, leading to a lot of guessing about which DC characters might appear, it’s been confirmed that Cristin Milioti won’t be returning as Sofia Falcone. This means a second significant character from the first film won’t be in the sequel.

Despite becoming a key ally to Batman in the first film, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman (Selina Kyle) isn’t expected to appear in The Batman Part II. The movie saw her investigating Gotham’s criminal side with Batman and seeking revenge for a friend’s death, a quest cut short when her father was killed. While the first film left her future open-ended, it seems she won’t be back for the sequel. Though fans will be disappointed, this might be the best choice for the story overall.

Catwoman’s Absence From The Batman Part II Isn’t as Disastrous as It Seems

It’s not really a shock that Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman won’t be in The Batman Part II. At the end of The Batman, her character leaves Batman and Gotham to start a new life somewhere else. Because of this, it doesn’t seem likely she’d come back to the city anytime soon. The next movie will focus on other characters in Gotham, but the story might feel a little less complete without Catwoman.

One of the most compelling aspects of The Batman was the relationship between Batman and Catwoman, making it disappointing that she won’t be in the sequel. However, this also creates a chance for Catwoman to star in her own stories within the world of The Batman. With careful planning, DC can ensure a strong future for the character, even without her appearing in The Batman Part II.

Catwoman Can Still Have an Exciting Future in The Batman Franchise

Rather than forcing Catwoman into a story where she doesn’t quite fit, DC might be planning a separate project for her – perhaps a movie or TV series. A Catwoman spinoff would be a great follow-up to The Penguin. Luckily, the The Penguin series on HBO Max already sets things up nicely for what happens next with Selina Kyle. The finale showed Sofia Falcone being sent back to Arkham Asylum, where she received a letter hinting that Catwoman will likely appear in a future The Batman related project.

Currently, there are no confirmed plans for spin-off movies based on The Batman universe. It remains to be seen if DC will develop Catwoman’s story effectively in the future. However, a Catwoman-focused spin-off, especially one featuring Sofia (played by Milioti), would be a welcome addition. Getting The Batman Part II made has been challenging for DC since it was first announced in April 2022, with multiple delays pushing the release date to 2027, which has understandably frustrated fans. This slow progress could potentially impact any future plans for Catwoman. While her future is uncertain, it seems unlikely that DC would sideline such an iconic character without giving her a proper storyline.

The Batman Part II will open in theaters on October 1, 2027.
