Novelist Aggie Wiggs (Danes) is facing writer’s block with her second book, especially since her first novel was so well-received. Things get interesting when real estate developer Niles Jarvis (Rhys) offers himself as a fascinating subject for her to write about.

Niles has been repeatedly accused of killing his former wife, Maddie, and he wants a chance to defend himself. However, it’s unclear whether he’s truly been wrongly accused, or if he’s as villainous as people believe.

The Beast in Me ending explained: Niles and Aggie’s feud explodes – but who wins?

Even though Niles and Aggie occasionally showed signs of becoming closer, they ultimately remained bitter enemies throughout The Beast in Me. They were both determined to ruin each other’s lives, and Aggie was the one who finally managed to do so at the very end.

When the story begins, it’s not clear if the claims that Niles killed his former wife, Maddie, are true. However, his intimidating behavior and forceful actions make Aggie quite suspicious of him.

The story kicks off when a visibly stressed and drunk FBI agent, Brian Abbot (David Lyons), unexpectedly shows up at her home one night, urgently warning her about the threat next door.

Abbot’s constant harassment of Niles tragically leads to his death – he’s murdered by the ruthless businessman in a violent fight during the fourth episode. However, we don’t find out what happens to Maddie until the second-to-last episode.

We see in a past scene that Maddie was secretly working with the FBI, helping them investigate Niles’s illegal activities. She hoped this would finally allow her to escape his control and get him arrested.

Life with Niles wasn’t a loving relationship; it was terrifying. He used manipulation, threats, and had a history of violence, leading Maddie to fear for her life. She felt she had to do something extreme to protect herself.

Maddie’s assistant, Nina (Brittany Snow), discovered Maddie was secretly sabotaging the company and told Niles, unaware this revelation would lead to Maddie’s death. Nina unintentionally revealed that Maddie was the one responsible for the damaging leak.

After she went missing, Nina didn’t question the holes in Niles’s explanation. Instead, she started a relationship with him and settled into a comfortable life in a beautiful suburban house.

When Niles tries to trick Aggie into taking the blame for Teddy Fenig’s murder – the man Aggie believes caused her son’s death – Nina finally reaches her breaking point and decides she can’t keep quiet anymore.

I was totally on the edge of my seat during that late-night scene with Nina and Niles! It was incredible to finally see Niles confess to everything – Maddie and Teddy… it was heavy stuff. But what really got to me was how desperately he seemed to want Nina’s approval, especially with their baby on the way. You could really feel his need for her to see him as a father, and it made the whole scene so much more complex and heartbreaking.

Despite appearing sympathetic to Niles, Daphne is secretly recording their conversation and immediately shares it with the authorities, revealing her feigned kindness.

In New York State, secretly recording a conversation with someone’s knowledge but without their consent is allowed in court. This means Nina’s risky plan to record a conversation could finally give investigators the proof they need to confirm their existing doubts.

Niles is publicly arrested by the police following a celebratory speech at his new development, Jarvis Yards. He is then convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release.

Aggie planned to keep interviewing the man while he was in prison, but after just one session, he was killed by other inmates. The attack was ordered by Rick (Tim Guinee), a close advisor to the man’s father.

Rick also suffocates Martin Jarvis (Jonathan Banks) in the hospital, ending the life of a man he greatly respected. Jarvis was unlikely to recover from a serious stroke, which was worsened by the pressure of concealing Niles’s wrongdoings.

A welcome change of pace, Aggie is now much more at peace. She’s finally come to terms with her role in her son’s death and is letting go of the bitterness she’s held onto for so long.

Things end on a somewhat more troubling note for Nina, though, who takes the final scene.

We watch her tenderly care for her baby with Niles, and as she gazes into the infant’s eyes, she seems to wonder if the baby will inherit negative traits from Niles and repeat a pattern of harmful behavior.

This situation feels like a classic debate about whether someone is shaped more by their genes or their environment. But as Nina lovingly kisses the baby, she appears resolved to help this child, named Jarvis, grow up well.
