2025 was a fantastic year for anime, with both TV series and movies attracting a wider audience than ever before. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, for instance, became the highest-grossing anime film of all time, earning hundreds of millions of dollars. It even topped the North American box office for two consecutive weekends. While the film received mostly positive reviews, with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, another anime release managed to achieve a perfect score and reach a significant milestone.
The new movie, Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc, has become a huge success in Western markets, topping the box office charts during its opening weekend. It’s already earned over $17 million in North America, and with worldwide earnings exceeding $100 million, it’s a major win for MAPPA. Japan has been a key contributor, bringing in over $46 million for Denji’s first big-screen adventure. While it probably won’t reach the same level of profit as Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man The Movie demonstrates that anime is achieving unprecedented success.
Why Chainsaw Man is King
In our review of Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc, we explained why seeing it in theaters is a must. We gave the movie a 4.5 out of 5 rating and highlighted why it’s a great choice for a Halloween movie. Here’s a look at how we described the film’s scariest moments in our review.
I was genuinely surprised by how frightening Chainsaw Man The Movie: The Reze Arc turned out to be. As a longtime fan of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, I’ve read the whole series, but MAPPA did an incredible job of bringing the creepiest parts of the Bomb Devil’s story to life on screen. The movie has some truly unsettling moments, making it a perfect watch for Halloween. Adapting Fujimoto’s artwork is always a challenge, but the studio found clever ways to not only recreate the manga panels, but actually improve upon them.
Currently, it’s unclear when or how Denji’s story will continue in anime form. While another season of Chainsaw Man is expected to adapt the rest of the manga, it’s unknown if it will be a new season or another movie. With MAPPA already scheduled to release new seasons of Hell’s Paradise and Jujutsu Kaisen in 2026, fans may have to wait a while to see Denji back on screen.
