The Best Avengers Recruit of the Last 20 Years Puts The MCU’s OG Heroes To Shame

For the past two decades, Marvel’s most surprising hero was often dismissed by those unaware of her true capabilities. Her abilities tend to draw skepticism, but few, even among the Avengers’ most celebrated teams, understand heroism quite like she does. This hero realized early on that she possessed the potential to change the world, and she’s consistently gone above and beyond to do so.

Doreen Allene Green, also known as Squirrel Girl, is a newer hero compared to the original Avengers, but she’s actually been around longer than many of the latest people trying to become Avengers. She’s also probably one of the most overlooked heroes ever. It’s understandable-when you hear about a superhero whose power involves squirrels, you naturally expect someone else to step up and help.

From the moment she appeared, Squirrel Girl has become a familiar face throughout the Marvel Universe, but she often doesn’t receive the recognition she deserves. Her fellow heroes have playfully nicknamed her Tail Girl, Rodent, and Nutball, however, fans appreciate her enough to call her the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. She’s gained this unusual reputation for being surprisingly tough, even managing to defeat some of Marvel’s most powerful villains. This, along with her endlessly positive attitude, makes her a fantastic addition to the Avengers in recent years.

Squirrel Girl’s Powers Explained

As her name suggests, Squirrel Girl possesses unusual genetic changes that grant her abilities similar to those of a squirrel, including the power to talk to real squirrels. She has a grasping tail, and is incredibly strong, fast, agile, and quick to react. She also has a sharp eye for detail, meaning nothing gets past her. Furthermore, her jaw is powerful enough to crack open any nut, so it’s best to avoid getting too close! Perhaps most notably, Doreen also has a rapid healing ability, though it’s something she didn’t inherit from the squirrels themselves.

Here’s something else key to understanding Doreen: she’s consistently optimistic. From the very start, she aspired to be a superhero, and she didn’t allow minor setbacks to discourage her. Although Iron Man initially turned down her offer to be his sidekick, she didn’t take it to heart (in fact, she even assisted in rescuing him!).

Because Squirrel Girl never gave up, she consistently happened to be where she was needed most. Whether people noticed her help is another story. The Great Lakes Avengers were the first superhero team to recognize her abilities. She teamed up with them, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. However, that’s not quite true – even though her comic series has finished, we all know she’s still out there being awesome and saving the day.

Squirrel Girl Has Faced Down Unlikely Villains and Won

Squirrel Girl is well-known for always managing to get out of unbelievably difficult situations. It’s gone beyond just being famous, though – her wins are so unusual they often become internet memes. This is likely because Squirrel Girl has defeated some of Marvel’s most powerful villains, but not in a typical head-to-head battle. She finds unique ways to win, which makes her victories so memorable and shareable. It’s a testament to her cleverness and resourcefulness.

Okay, in a direct fight, most people would agree that Squirrel Girl would likely be defeated by opponents like Doctor Doom, Galactus, or Thanos. However, she’s known for her unconventional thinking, and this often changes the definition of winning. Her encounter with Galactus is a prime example: she met him on the moon, had a friendly conversation, and ultimately found him an alternative planet to consume instead of Earth. Essentially, Squirrel Girl accomplished what many superhero teams have had to do when dealing with Galactus: she distracted and redirected him. It was effective, and no one is questioning her approach.

In the end, Doreen is a truly unique hero who sees the world in her own way. She bravely faces even the most daunting challenges, believing nothing is truly impossible. She believes every problem has a solution, and staying positive is usually the best place to start. This mindset has helped her succeed, and it’s something we could all benefit from. Honestly, it’s a valuable lesson for everyone.

Seriously, Nobody Can Stop Squirrel Girl

Do you recall us saying that heroes often underestimate Squirrel Girl? It’s a common occurrence. It often shows up as a quick dismissal, like from Iron Man, but sometimes it leads to actual battles. Squirrel Girl isn’t one to start fights with other heroes (unlike Deadpool), but she consistently proves she can finish any fight that begins. For instance, she famously surprised everyone when she easily defeated the Merc with a Mouth. If that story rings a bell, it’s likely because it’s one of the two well-known Squirrel Girl battles that fans love to talk about. Doreen won this fight because of her abilities, and importantly, how Deadpool’s healing factor functions. Just a heads up: her smaller attacks don’t override his cancer, but they definitely add up over time.

Throughout her career, Doreen has proven she’s far more than just a cheerful face. This hero is a skilled fighter. Her close-quarters combat ability is comparable to Wolverine’s, even without his claws. While most of Doreen’s structured fighting skills came from training with other superheroes, it’s clear that her most unique techniques originate from her own creativity, or are developed through brainstorming with her Squirrel Army. Regardless, these moves are inherently chaotic, making them both surprising and dangerous.

Squirrel Girl is a truly remarkable and imaginative superhero. She consistently maintains a positive outlook, which allows her to find ways to win, even when things look hopeless. This optimistic approach is a key reason she’s been successful as a hero for so long. Unfortunately, Squirrel Girl doesn’t receive the recognition she merits, either from other superheroes or from readers.
