The DC Universe is incredibly diverse, featuring all sorts of locations – from gritty cities and futuristic planets to fantastical realms with their own strange rules. This huge range of settings allows for endless storytelling possibilities, as each place has a distinct feel and history. For example, Gotham City’s dark, gothic style and criminal underworld are ideal for Batman, while the Gem World’s unique magic and design perfectly suit Amethyst’s coming-of-age adventures. These environments offer great opportunities for compelling stories, and DC has recently reintroduced one of its best: the Spirit World.
Inspired by Chinese mythology, the Spirit World is a realm where souls go after death while waiting to be reborn. It’s a unique part of the DC Universe, filled with vivid colors, traditional concepts, and compelling stories. Recently, in Batgirl (2024) #18, Cassandra Cain—considered by many to be the best Batgirl—returned to the Spirit World. She previously explored this dangerous realm in the Spirit World miniseries, a journey that nearly killed her. This time, she’s willingly going back with two friends to uncover the source of her newfound abilities. It’s an enjoyable story arc for Cassandra Cain, and a tantalizing glimpse into a world that deserves further development.
A Mission Through Metaphor and Reality

In the previous issue, Batgirl attempted to join the Bat-Family for dinner, but a strange affliction caused her blood to turn against her, attacking everything nearby. She sought help from Jade Tiger and Jaya, and together they discovered that Cass and Tanji’s cousin, the Bloodmaster, had established a base of operations in Gotham. They confronted him, demanding to know why Cass was developing powers she shouldn’t have, but their confrontation led to a shocking act of violence: Wu Lin, the Bloodmaster’s boss, was shot by his own secretary. The workers then used his body to open a gateway to the Spirit World. With no other options, Batgirl and her team bravely jumped into the portal.
The heroes were instantly ambushed by creatures from the Spirit World who wanted to drain their life energy, but Wu Lin intervened. He revealed that his late father intended to take over his body and use the Blood of Wu for evil again. Wu Lin offered to lead them out of the Spirit World and help Batgirl master her unique bloodline, if they would protect him. As they journeyed across the land, Wu Lin trained Batgirl, emphasizing that her blood represented an unbreakable connection to her history. He explained that even if she found a new family, she could never truly escape her past, and denying it would only give the blood more control over her.
Cass became incredibly skilled at manipulating her blood, shaping it into deadly weapons and then dismissing it when she was finished. Despite this power, she was still struggling with her family history. She desperately wanted to distance herself from her blood relatives, while her half-brother, Tenji, hoped to find their mother in the afterlife. Meanwhile, Batgirl was trying to escape her past, but returning home meant confronting it head-on – especially when she encountered the ghostly form of someone crucial to her journey, possibly her mother or an aunt she’d never met.
The Potential of Spirits Turned Real

The Spirit World is a realm of incredible possibilities within the DC Universe. It’s unlike any other place, drawing heavily from Chinese mythology and filled with magical, fairy-like creatures. Beyond its distinct and unique look, the Spirit World is ideal for stories focused on characters’ emotions and inner struggles. Because it’s inhabited by spirits – many of whom prey on the living – characters are constantly forced to confront their pasts. The Spirit World also allows for the physical representation of abstract ideas and deities, as seen with Cass, whose lineage and struggles were amplified by the power of the Midnight Eye.
The Spirit World is a place where anything is possible, and ultimately, everything does happen. Time works differently there – people can seemingly disappear for weeks without it affecting their everyday lives. It’s inhabited by a wide range of creatures who can change their appearance, and the concept of Collectives – groups of souls united by a shared purpose – is particularly fascinating. This realm can be both concrete and symbolic, blending the two in a vibrant way that’s new for DC stories. It’s a world of constant surprises, and every corner of it deserves to be discovered.
