Science fiction has long been a favorite at the movies, and the 2000s marked a fresh, exciting period for the genre. Thanks to huge leaps in special effects and more diverse storytelling, the decade gave us some truly memorable and impactful sci-fi films, such as Avatar, Children of Men, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. However, some good movies from that time have been forgotten, including a sci-fi comedy from the early 2000s that you can now find streaming on Paramount+.
Okay, so there’s this fun movie called Evolution from 2001. If you loved Ghostbusters, it’s definitely trying to capture that same energy – basically, scientists fighting something totally bizarre and otherworldly. Ivan Reitman, the guy who directed Ghostbusters, was at the helm for this one too. The story follows a couple of college professors, a geologist, and a fireman who have to save the world from an alien that crash-lands in Arizona and starts evolving at an insane rate. It’s got a great cast – David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, Julianne Moore, and Ted Levine are all in it. And good news, it just started streaming on Paramount+ as of March 1st!
Evolution Is a Guilty Pleasure Sci-Fi Comedy That Still Holds Up
While not quite the inspiration for Ghostbusters, Evolution is a fun, undemanding sci-fi comedy that remains enjoyable today. Like Ghostbusters, it’s a lighthearted story about unlikely heroes battling a bizarre, supernatural danger. The movie is fast-paced, playfully disrespectful, and features a cast with great chemistry, creating genuinely funny and hilarious scenes. Even after more than two decades, the special effects and creature designs still look surprisingly good.
While Evolution is a fun and nostalgic look back at the 2000s, it wasn’t initially well-received. The movie underperformed in theaters, earning $98 million despite costing $80 million to make, and received negative reviews from both critics and audiences (44% and 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively). Thankfully, Evolution has gained a cult following in recent years, and it even found some success on streaming. After becoming available on Paramount+, it quickly rose to become the No. 3 most-watched movie in the U.S., although it’s no longer in the top rankings.
What’s New on Paramount+?
Paramount+ added a lot more than just Evolution this March! New titles include Congo (a movie similar to Jurassic Park), most of the Friday the 13th films, Good Will Hunting, the first three Spy Kids movies, and White House Down. For TV shows, Season 3 of Tracker, Season 8 of The Loud House, and The Madison—a new series from the creator of Yellowstone—are now available.
