The recent struggles of The Witcher clearly demonstrate a lesson for all fantasy TV series. With season 5 planned as the show’s finale, and recent seasons receiving increasingly negative reviews from both critics and viewers, it’s becoming apparent that The Witcher will likely end on a disappointing note.
While casting changes were part of the problem, the disappointing end to season 4 of The Witcher didn’t improve things after a series of weak episodes. Over time, The Witcher has become a failure for Netflix, and its decline sends a warning to Netflix and the broader TV industry about the importance of quality fantasy programming.
The Legend Of Vox Machina Is A Reminder That Fantasy Works Better In Animation

Prime Video’s animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, suggests that fantasy stories really shine when told through animation. Remarkably, the show has maintained a perfect 100
So far, every critic has loved all three seasons of Vox Machina, with no negative reviews at all. It remains to be seen if season 4 will continue this perfect streak, but it’s clear that The Legend of Vox Machina is a huge success.
The animation is beautiful, the voice acting is excellent, and the show is genuinely funny and exciting. Combined with its roots in the popular Critical Role series, The Legend of Vox Machina clearly demonstrates the power of animation to elevate fantasy television.
Netflix’s Best The Witcher Project Is An Animated One
It’s kind of funny, considering The Witcher is one of the shows that The Legend of Vox Machina is trying to save, but I honestly think animation suits fantasy stories better – and The Witcher proves it. They’ve tried a few spin-offs, and while some like Blood Origin and Sirens of the Deep didn’t really work, they have had success with at least one of them.
Netflix released an animated movie in 2021 called Nightmare of the Wolf, which serves as a prequel to The Witcher series. It’s the highest-rated installment in The Witcher franchise, achieving a perfect 100
Despite an initial positive response, the later seasons of The Witcher (seasons 3 and 4) haven’t been well-received, suggesting Netflix is struggling with the series. Ironically, the strongest Witcher content was an animated film, and while Netflix acknowledged the success of The Legend of Vox Machina, they haven’t applied those lessons to The Witcher.
Prestige Live-Action Fantasy Shows Have Become A Risky Investment
Live-action fantasy shows can be a gamble, as demonstrated by the success – and risks – of The Witcher. Similar shows like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power face the same challenges. Because they’re based on popular books or stories, they need to satisfy existing fans while also attracting new viewers.
I’ve been following these fantasy shows closely, and it’s clear they’re incredibly expensive to make. While The Witcher and The Wheel of Time didn’t quite land with everyone – even fans of the books seemed divided – that probably contributed to why they didn’t last. The Rings of Power, though, has really grabbed people’s attention and held on to an audience, even if a few super-dedicated Tolkien fans haven’t fully embraced it. It’s fascinating to see how different shows connect with viewers!
Big-budget fantasy shows are proving to be a gamble, with only about a third of recent live-action series succeeding. Animation offers a safer option, as it’s significantly cheaper to produce than live-action shows like The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, and particularly The Rings of Power, even though animation is still an expensive undertaking.
The success of The Legend of Vox Machina demonstrates that a lower budget doesn’t necessarily mean lower quality – in fact, it’s been widely praised. Other content creators should consider this and try to achieve similar success with their own fantasy projects, learning from what’s become one of the best fantasy shows available.
