Fans of the acclaimed historical manga Vinland Saga will be excited to learn that a long-running series that may have influenced it, Historie, is finally getting an anime adaptation. Vinland Saga, known for its compelling story of Thorfinn’s journey from revenge to redemption, is considered one of the best historical manga available. Historie, which began in 2003 – a year before Vinland Saga – is a similarly well-regarded series, and many fans have speculated about its possible impact on Yukimura’s work. Now, viewers can see the potential inspiration firsthand.
Today, January 1, 2026, the creators announced an anime version of Historie on the series’ official X account, releasing a short teaser trailer. The animation is being handled by LIDENFILMS, the studio behind popular anime like Tokyo Revengers and Goblin Slayer. Although details like the release date are still unknown, fans are excited about this adaptation due to the story’s similarities to Vinland Saga and the creator’s previous work.
Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Historie Anime Adaptation Announced
The TV anime adaptation of “Historië,” a historical epic by Masami Iwamine, has been announced! Set in ancient Greece, the story follows a young man of exceptional intelligence, observation skills, judgment, and courage. He is the one who would record history…

Before starting his series Historie in 2003, Hitoshi Iwaaki had already achieved success with Parasyte. The anime adaptation of Parasyte by Madhouse became very popular, which helped build an audience for anime versions of his future work. However, Historie might appeal to today’s viewers because its story feels similar to Vinland Saga. Set in ancient Greece, Historie centers on Eumenes, whose life is transformed after being enslaved and then freed – a journey that echoes the experiences of Thorfinn.
Thorfinn’s time as a slave forces him to rethink his life and seek peace, using his intelligence to contribute to a more peaceful world. However, Eumenes, once freed, chooses a different path, applying his cleverness and strategic thinking to warfare and dangerous challenges, ultimately becoming a significant historical figure. The anime Vinland Saga and Historie share common themes, so viewers who enjoy Vinland Saga will likely appreciate Historie, particularly if they are also fans of Parasyte.
