The Jurassic Park series has been declining in quality since 2015’s Jurassic World, and hasn’t recovered. The subsequent films – Fallen Kingdom, Dominion, and Jurassic World: Rebirth – all failed to recapture the magic of the original, and the franchise’s future is now unclear. It’s disappointing, because there was potential for a truly great sequel that wasn’t realized.
The Jurassic Park movies have always moved forward in time, with each film taking place after the previous one – there haven’t been any prequels or timeline jumps. Although some movies have changed past events or added stories that seemed to happen at the same time as other films, the series has generally followed a single, continuous timeline (excluding the animated series). However, to revitalize the franchise, a prequel might be exactly what’s needed.
A Movie About The Creation Of Jurassic World Is The Best Next Step

The Jurassic Park series feels like it’s explored all its major ideas, making a new sequel a challenge. However, a prequel focusing on the creation of Jurassic World would be a great idea. There’s a significant gap between Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World (2015), and a lot happened during those years that could be explored. Specifically, the construction of Jurassic World itself offers a fantastic story opportunity for a prequel film.
The Jurassic World trilogy reveals that the park was built to fulfill the dying wish of John Hammond. Planning started in 1998, led by Simon Masrani, and Dr. Wu joined the project. Construction began in 2002, and the park was completed in 2004, opening its doors to the public in 2005. It operated successfully for ten years before the events of the first Jurassic World film. Although the timeline appears simple, the park’s development likely faced numerous challenges and setbacks.
Jurassic World is built on Isla Nublar, the same island as the first Jurassic Park. This suggests that the companies building the new park had to reclaim the island from the dinosaurs that had taken over since the original park’s abandonment. It would have been a huge undertaking, considering the island had been left to the dinosaurs for years. This reclamation clearly happened, as the original park area is now secure and people can travel to Nublar when Jurassic World opens.
Beyond the dinosaurs themselves, a prequel to Jurassic World could delve into the political battles surrounding the creation of these creatures. After a dinosaur incident in San Diego, the government created strict rules limiting InGen’s dinosaur research. InGen later successfully lobbied to loosen those restrictions, and it would be fascinating to see that process unfold in a movie.
The Story Of Jurassic World’s Creation Has Been Told Before (But Not In A Movie)

We know a lot about how Jurassic World came to be, but not because of the films themselves. This information comes from the broader Jurassic Park universe. Before Jurassic World was released, Universal created a clever marketing campaign that built up the backstory of the new trilogy. They launched websites, like one for the Dinosaur Protection Group, which presented the history of dinosaurs within the franchise as if it were real. Plus, comics and TV shows added even more details and context.
Sadly, much of the original marketing for this franchise has been forgotten. While dedicated fans have carefully documented the story and its timeline – you can find a complete version on the Jurassic Park Fandom website – it’s not widely known, so a lot of fans have missed out on this part of the experience.
A new movie would bring the thrilling story of Jurassic Park to a wider audience. The plotline of InGen trying to rebuild their dinosaur park on Isla Nublar is a great way to start a fresh Jurassic Park film, and hopefully Universal Pictures will bring this compelling story to the big screen.
