As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I must admit that the recent release of “Jurassic World Rebirth” has been making waves at the box office. However, for those who prefer to catch up on the iconic dinosaur-focused franchise from the comfort of their homes, there’s no dearth of Jurassic Park films to indulge in. Originating back in 1993, this blockbuster series has since ascended to become one of the most successful franchises ever, boasting a grand total of nine movies. Interestingly, three of the finest films in this series are currently available for streaming.
The classic Jurassic Park film series, which includes Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), and Jurassic Park III (2001), made its debut on Netflix’s streaming library this past Friday as part of a plethora of new additions to kick off August. In the first installment, Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg, dinosaur-themed island park visitors, played by Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, find themselves in trouble when genetically recreated dinosaurs break free from their enclosures and start attacking the guests. The story is adapted from Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel.
Jurassic Park significantly impacted cinema by skillfully blending computer-generated imagery (CGI), practical effects, and animatronics. It eventually earned over $1 billion globally. To this very day, the film remains popular, boasting a high approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with both critics and audiences giving it their thumbs up.
Spielberg once again took the helm for the 1997 sequel to the original movie, titled “The Lost World: Jurassic Park.” Four years after the initial film’s events, this sequel focused on a research team venturing to a hidden second island where dinosaurs created through cloning were running wild. The film was a blockbuster hit of the year, but it didn’t quite match the success of “Jurassic World,” earning $618.6 million globally.
2001’s sequel, “Jurassic Park III,” was the initial film in the series without Steven Spielberg as director. Joe Johnston stepped up to lead the production, while Sam Neill and Laura Dern returned to their roles from the first two movies. They were joined by a fresh set of characters played by William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Alessandro Nivola, and Trevor Morgan. These changes in direction and acting resulted in the franchise’s lowest box office earnings to date, totaling approximately $368.8 million worldwide.
The three initial Jurassic Park movies are currently available for streaming on Netflix, as Jurassic World Dominion, the latest addition to the series, is still playing in cinemas. The film, featuring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, has earned $721 million worldwide. Despite receiving a poor review from critics with a 51% rating, it boasts a 71% positive response from the audience.
