Graded VHS Tapes Worth Huge Amounts of Money

National Lampoon’s European Vacation

This comic book received a grade of 9.4 from CGC and sold for $500.00. Generally, collectors are only interested in comics they loved as children. The most valuable comics tap into that nostalgia from the 1980s and 90s, like issues based on the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, including the 1985 sequel, European Vacation.

Explorers

This copy of the movie Explorers received a grade of 9.4 and sold for $500. While Explorers isn’t a hugely famous or critically acclaimed film, it holds a special place for those who grew up watching it on VHS in the mid-1980s. Those who fondly remember it are likely willing to pay a good price for a near-perfect copy, like this one.

The Terminator

This VHS copy of The Terminator received a grade of 9.8 from CGC and sold for $519.99. Considering the film’s huge popularity and lasting impact, that price feels surprisingly low!

Return of the Jedi

This copy of Return of the Jedi VHS received a grade of 9.6 from CGC and sold for $552.49. The value of collectible VHS tapes, like this CBS/Fox release from the mid-1980s, is often driven by the popularity of the film itself. Star Wars has a large and dedicated fan base that collects related vintage items, which creates high demand for original VHS copies.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship: The Beginning

This VHS tape of the first-ever UFC pay-per-view is a piece of sports history, and its value reflects the current high demand for collectibles. Graded CGC 9.4, it recently sold for $600.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

As a collector and critic, I’ve been watching the VHS market closely, and the numbers don’t lie: horror consistently tops the charts on eBay for graded tapes. It’s fascinating, really. You could write a whole piece on why horror fans are so passionate about VHS – I think it’s deeply tied to nostalgia. For many of us who grew up in the ’80s, VHS was how we discovered horror, often with movies we weren’t quite old enough to see on the big screen. That explains why tapes from franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street are fetching serious money – a recent copy graded at 9.4 just sold for $700!

The Empire Strikes Back

This comic book graded 9.4 by CGC sold for $750. It’s not surprising that The Empire Strikes Back fetched a higher price than Return of the Jedi. Most collectors would choose to spend $750 on The Empire Strikes Back over Return of the Jedi for $550, and that’s reflected in the sale price.

Over the Top

This VHS copy of Sylvester Stallone’s Over the Top received a grade of 9.6 and sold for $750. It’s a surprising price, considering the film isn’t one of Stallone’s most popular. While tapes of Rocky IV or Rambo: First Blood Part II becoming collectibles makes sense, $750 for a graded copy of Over the Top seems a bit high – though the seller was having trouble finding the right words to describe it!

The Wizard

This Nintendo game, graded at 9.4, recently sold for $850. Like classic VHS tapes, vintage Nintendo games, especially sealed and professionally graded ones, are becoming highly collectible. It’s not surprising someone willing to spend thousands on a perfect copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 would also pay $850 for The Wizard, a popular kids’ movie from the late 1980s that heavily featured Nintendo.

Star Wars

This copy of The Empire Strikes Back received a grade of 9.4 and sold for $868.00. It’s interesting that copies of this film are more valuable than Return of the Jedi, suggesting Star Wars tapes are also worth more. And, being able to actually watch the movie by opening the sealed VHS case might just be worth the price alone!

Halloween II

This copy of Halloween II received a grade of CGC 9.6 and recently sold for $900. While sequels are usually worth less than original movies on the vintage VHS market, popular horror sequels can still fetch high prices. This particular copy proves that, as a fan paid $900 for this highly-graded version.

Predator

This copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Predator comic book received a grade of 9.4 from CGC and sold for $950.00. I was the one who bought it—a nearly perfect copy cost me almost a thousand dollars! (Please don’t tell my wife; I’d hate to get divorced.)

Back to the Future

This copy of Back to the Future graded CGC 9.6 recently sold for $1,150.00. It’s an early print with a red MCA label, which adds to its value. There are many different versions of these VHS tapes, and some are quite rare and collectible, but researching them all could take a lifetime!

Halloween

This VHS copy of Halloween received a grade of 9.2 from CGC and sold for $1,249.99. Before researching collectible VHS tapes, I would have predicted Halloween would be highly sought after. It’s a timeless classic, a cornerstone of the slasher film genre, and was released early in the VHS format, meaning first-edition copies are likely rare – and I was correct.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

This comic book received a grade of 9.6 from CGC and sold for $1,282.00. It’s a popular collectible, as evidenced by the demand from collectors and the high price it fetches – Freddy Krueger continues to be a sought-after character!

The Matrix

This copy of The Matrix received a grade of 9.8 from CGC and sold for $1,425.00. What makes this VHS tape valuable is its age – it’s from 1999, which is later than most other highly sought-after VHS tapes. By 1999, VHS tapes were becoming rare, so copies of The Matrix are much harder to find. The seller also playfully suggests that, in the world of the movie, analog copies like this would be the only ones still functioning after the machines take over.

Jaws

I recently saw a copy of Jaws graded at 9.6, and it sold for $1,500! It really makes you think about collecting. Like Halloween, Jaws just feels like a movie destined to become a valuable item – it’s historically significant, a horror classic, and those first VHS tapes are over 40 years old now. It’s making me want to start grabbing copies of the movies I grew up with… just when I thought it was safe!

Friday the 13th

This tape received a grade of VGA 85+ and sold for $1,691.00. It’s actually a Betamax tape, not VHS, which could be a problem if someone wanted to watch it—working Betamax players are very hard to find. However, the buyer likely isn’t interested in watching Friday the 13th; they’re purchasing a rare piece of slasher film memorabilia.

Transformers: The Movie

This copy of the original Transformers movie received a grade of 9.4 from CGC and recently sold for $1,725 on eBay. While the movie was a bit scary for me growing up, it’s clear that dedicated Transformers fans are willing to pay a lot for a piece of its history.

Pokémon: The First Movie

This copy of Pokémon: The First Movie on VHS recently sold for $1,750.00 and received a grade of 9.8 from CGC, making it the most expensive single VHS tape I’ve found on eBay. Considering how much early Pokémon cards are now worth—one Pikachu card recently sold for over $16.4 million—it’s not surprising that the VHS tapes are also becoming highly sought after.
