2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for science fiction. Big-budget movies like Jurassic World: Rebirth are revitalizing a classic franchise and promising more successful sequels, and Avatar: Fire and Ash is also highly anticipated. However, two well-received Predator films might overshadow even those blockbusters. Despite the strong movie lineup, the upcoming science fiction TV shows are expected to be the biggest draw this year.
Now that Predator is back with a strong new installment, the Alien franchise is also gaining momentum with the upcoming series Alien: Earth, which brings the Xenomorph to a setting we know well. Meanwhile, Vince Gilligan is creating a compelling mystery with Pluribus, a show that offers a fresh take on the apocalypse. However, both Alien: Earth and Pluribus are following the lead of another sci-fi series that isn’t widely available yet.
The War Between the Land and the Sea Isn’t Holding Back With Its Social Commentary

The future of Doctor Who is currently uncertain. While Ncuti Gatwa’s time as the Doctor showed promise, the series struggled to gain momentum and ended with a particularly divisive regeneration. The collaboration between the BBC and Disney, intended to elevate the show, didn’t deliver the hoped-for results for either company. However, a new spin-off series, developed with Disney’s involvement, has recently launched to widespread acclaim and could very well be the best science fiction show of 2025.
“The War Between the Land and the Sea” introduces Homo Aqua, a water-dwelling species who have lived on Earth far longer than humans. Driven to the surface by centuries of pollution, they threaten action unless their demands are met. Kate Lethbridge-Stewart of UNIT attempts to negotiate, but Homo Aqua unexpectedly chooses a regular office worker, Barclay Pierre-Dupont, as their spokesperson. The resulting story is incredibly compelling, and the excitement is building with no signs of slowing down. It deserves a wider audience!
Most of the World Can’t Watch The War Between the Land and the Sea Until 2026

With The War Between the Land and the Sea possibly being Disney’s last installment of Doctor Who, you might think all episodes would be immediately available on Disney+. However, the BBC controls the release and won’t make it available until next year. Disney has confirmed a 2026 international release, but hasn’t announced a specific date. It’s unfortunate, especially since the show is already receiving rave reviews in the UK, but it’s definitely worth the wait.
Russell T Davies’ new show is shorter than many American viewers are accustomed to, with just five episodes. However, this could be a good thing. Many science fiction series suffer from lasting too long and losing focus. By keeping the story concise, The War Between the Land and the Sea aims to tell a strong, focused story and potentially revitalize the Doctor Who franchise, which has struggled to find a clear path forward. It’s even possible that the future of Doctor Who lies in spin-off series that don’t center on the Doctor, and frankly, anything is possible at this point.
