Fans of the renowned anime “Monster” have long requested a superior quality version, and their wishes are finally being granted. The acclaimed series is set to debut in Blu-ray format thanks to Discotek Media. Despite its cult-status and widespread praise, the physical media availability for this classic has been limited, with prices skyrocketing for DVDs and Blu-rays region-locked, leaving American fans frustrated. However, the news that it will soon be accessible to North American audiences in high definition is a triumph for those who have eagerly waited all these years. The upcoming release of Naoki Urasawa’s magnum opus, his most recognized work, is slated for next year.
In August 9th, 2025, during Otakon convention this year, Discotek Media announced nine new licenses for release, encompassing both classics and popular titles. Among these is the 2004 anime “Monster,” with plans to release all 74 episodes in high definition by 2026. The Blu-ray edition will offer Japanese audio, English subtitles, and an English dub. Other enticing licenses set for distribution include “Shin Ace o Nerae!”, “Shin-chan,” the fourth, fifth, and sixth Digimon movies, and additional titles. Given Discotek Media’s past involvement with licenses like “Berserk” (1997), “City Hunter,” and “Fist of the North Star,” the upcoming release of “Monster” promises to delight fans who have longed to enjoy this exceptional series in top-notch quality.

Titled “Monster,” this captivating series was created by Naoki Urusawa. The story unfolds around Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a gifted surgeon at Isler Memorial, engaged to the director’s daughter. However, when he chooses to disobey orders and save a young boy instead of the mayor, his life takes a drastic turn. The mayor’s death leads to the loss of Tenma’s career, status, and relationship. Shortly after, the boy and his twin sister disappear, followed by multiple murders among doctors. Nine years later, a German detective suspects Tenma, but he encounters someone from his past-the real instigator of these events. Plagued by remorse, Tenma embarks on a journey across Germany, meeting allies who strengthen his resolve to prevent the lethal repercussions of his decision and seek forgiveness.
In 2004, the anime was transformed by studio Madhouse (known for Hunter x Hunter, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Hajime no Ippo), comprising a total of 74 episodes. This manga and anime adaptation is highly acclaimed, delving into complex topics like human morality, good versus evil, and more, while also offering a gripping psychological thriller experience. Over the years, it has amassed a dedicated fanbase, marking Urusawa’s initial significant success before producing other hits like 20th Century Boys, Pluto, and Billy Bat.
The popular manga boasts over twenty versions currently in circulation and has garnered numerous accolades, including the revered Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and Shogakukan Manga Award in the general category. An adaption of this story that remained true to its essence while incorporating elements unique to animation serves as an excellent introduction for those intrigued by the works of the man hailed as “the greatest storyteller of our time” by Bong Joon Ho. In 2026, fans can expect an enhanced viewing experience with the highest quality release yet.
