The 1990s were a fantastic time for television. The variety of shows was incredible, covering every genre imaginable, and many became truly iconic. Thanks to the growth of cable and innovative shows like The X-Files, along with popular programming blocks like NBC’s Must-See TV, the decade offered something for everyone. Sitcoms especially thrived, and many remain popular today, perfectly capturing the spirit of the ’90s – and now, one of the best is coming to streaming.
Originally airing on CBS from 1993 to 1999, The Nanny starred Fran Drescher, who also co-created the show with Peter Marc Jacobson. The series centers around a stylish saleswoman from Queens who unexpectedly becomes the nanny to three children of a Broadway producer. The show was a hit with both critics and fans, and after being available on different streaming platforms, all six seasons will now be available on Hulu starting March 18th.
The Nanny Is a ‘90s Icon (And It Almost Ended Too Soon)
Many people consider The Nanny to be one of the best sitcoms – and television shows overall – of the 1990s. Some even compare it to I Love Lucy, recognizing its strong comedy and the performances of Fran Drescher, Charles Shaughnessy, Daniel Davis, Lauren Lane, and the young actors Nicholle Tom, Benjamin Salisbury, and Madeline Zima. Despite its current popularity and devoted fanbase, The Nanny nearly ended after its first season.
Despite a promising start with a highly-rated pilot and positive reviews, the first season of The Nanny didn’t attract many viewers. This almost led to the show being cancelled, but one network executive championed it. Thankfully, CBS decided to keep The Nanny on the air, and it proved to be a smart move. The show ran for six seasons, earning award nominations and even winning an Emmy. It also became popular internationally, achieving high ratings in other countries and inspiring several foreign remakes.
Considering how popular and enduring The Nanny became, it’s surprising to learn it almost didn’t make it past its first season. What’s even more notable is that the show is a rare example of a series that a network allowed to grow and find its viewers – something we don’t often see with streaming TV today. It’s easy to imagine The Nanny being canceled quickly if it premiered now, despite critical praise or potential. The fact that the show was supported and given the chance to become a classic makes you think about how many other potentially great series might have been lost in recent years simply because they weren’t given enough time to succeed.
All six seasons of The Nanny will be available to stream on Hulu starting March 18th.
