Turning a popular video game into a good movie is incredibly difficult, but a new adaptation now streaming on Peacock is proving to be one of the best yet. For decades, movies and TV shows based on video games have often been critical and commercial failures – think of films like the 1993 Super Mario Bros. and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. However, recent adaptations have started to succeed, both financially and with critics, and one stands out as being particularly well-done.
Let’s discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This 2023 animated comedy, based on the popular Nintendo Mario video games, was a huge hit with audiences and broke records as the first video game movie to earn over $1 billion worldwide. The film follows plumbers Mario and Luigi as they journey through a magical pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom. Due to its success, a sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is already planned for release on April 1st. But you don’t have to wait that long – The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available to stream on Peacock, having joined the platform on February 3rd.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie Successfully Brought the Beloved Video Game Franchise to the Big Screen
As a critic, I have to say The Super Mario Bros. Movie really nailed it. What struck me most was how well the filmmakers got what makes Mario so beloved. It’s a visually stunning, energetic film that truly captures the fun, look, and feel of the games we all grew up with. For longtime fans, it’s a total nostalgia trip. The story is simple – Mario’s on an epic quest to rescue his brother from Bowser – but it’s all about recreating that magical experience of playing the games. The animation is fantastic, bringing the Mushroom Kingdom and other familiar locations to life, and the movie’s pacing and action – all the running, jumping, and competing – really feels like you’re playing a Mario game on the big screen.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a crowd-pleaser that both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy. It’s packed with references to classic Mario games like Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Kart, including the famous Rainbow Road. The film was a hit with audiences, earning a very high 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, everyone is wondering if the upcoming sequel, inspired by Super Mario Galaxy and the Mario universe, will be just as successful.
What’s New on Peacock?
Peacock is starting February with a lot of new movies and shows! Before The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives, you can already stream titles like The Boss Baby, the 1989 classic The ‘Burbs, Happy Gilmore, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
