The Big Bang Theory Retconning a Character 17 Years Ago Sets Up Its Sequel Show for Success

A change made to a character in 2009 on The Big Bang Theory is now contributing to the potential success of its 2026 sequel. Given how popular the show was, it was inevitable that a follow-up series would be created. While The Big Bang Theory has seen spin-offs like Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, those shows take place earlier in the timeline. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the first series in the franchise to be set after the original show ended.

HBO Max’s new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, follows Stuart Bloom – best known as the standout supporting character from The Big Bang Theory – on a wild adventure through the multiverse. After accidentally breaking a reality-preserving device built by Sheldon and Leonard, Stuart finds himself on a mission to fix things. The show also stars Barry Kripke, Bert Kibble, and Denise. This series is a first for the Big Bang Theory universe, and a key difference from the original show’s early seasons might make it even more appealing to audiences.

The Big Bang Theory Retconned Stuart’s Character In Season 3

Before getting the main role in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Josh Sussman had a complicated journey with The Big Bang Theory. He originally auditioned for the part of Leonard Hofstadter, but Johnny Galecki got the role. He even briefly landed the part of Howard Wolowitz before a scheduling issue forced him to drop out, allowing Simon Helberg to take over. Despite these setbacks, creator Chuck Lorre continued to believe in Sussman and eventually brought him onto the show as Stuart, who first appeared in season 2 of The Big Bang Theory.

It’s been almost twenty years since Stuart first appeared, and it’s easy to forget how different he used to be. When he started on the show, he was much more self-assured and arrogant than most people remember. He wasn’t the nervous, quirky guy he became known as. In fact, he even managed to get a date with Penny once, which really made Leonard jealous.

The TV show The Big Bang Theory significantly altered the character of Stuart in season 3, despite him only appearing briefly in the season before. Many believe this change happened because of Stuart’s unsuccessful date with Penny, particularly when she mistakenly called Leonard’s name during a kiss. While the show never officially explained the shift, this incident is widely seen as the reason.

How Stuart’s Change In Demeanor Sets Up Stuart Fails To Save The Universe For Success

I always wondered what The Big Bang Theory could have been if they’d done more with Stuart. He wasn’t quite part of the core group, but he was definitely the most memorable supporting character. Knowing how much the actor, Kevin Sussman, contributed to the show, I’m really excited about Stuart Fails to Save the Universe – I’m definitely rooting for it!

What makes Stuart a good choice to lead a Big Bang Theory spinoff is how his character changed over time. If the show had kept his initially arrogant personality, he could have become a problematic character, contributing to the sometimes criticized humor of The Big Bang Theory, particularly in its earlier seasons. While Stuart definitely had awkward and somewhat off-putting qualities, he wasn’t as overtly inappropriate as Howard or as prejudiced as Sheldon could be.

It’s easy to find yourself cheering for Stuart in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe because he’s a relatable and down-to-earth character. While charismatic leads are enjoyable, audiences often connect more with underdogs, and Stuart definitely fits that role. In this sequel to The Big Bang Theory, he’s clearly out of his depth – unlike Sheldon, Leonard, and the others, he doesn’t have a science background or natural brilliance. He’s simply trying to do the right thing, driven by his own strong beliefs.

It’s not yet clear how Stuart will fix the strange device built by Sheldon and Leonard, but it’s great that he’s taking responsibility. As he tries to solve the problem, he’ll need to use his strengths. Hopefully, this experience will help him become more confident, which would be a really rewarding development for his character after everything we’ve seen of him on The Big Bang Theory.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2026.
