Recent data shows that streaming numbers for The Big Bang Theory have dropped significantly. Even though the original series ended almost seven years ago, it remains a key part of CBS’s programming. Following the conclusion of Young Sheldon, creator Chuck Lorre continued the story with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which has become the most popular comedy on network television in 2025 and 2026.
It’s true that the Big Bang Theory franchise has changed a lot since the original show. Young Sheldon evolved over time and ultimately focused more on the entire Cooper family than just Sheldon’s childhood. However, The Big Bang Theory remains popular, largely because it’s still widely available through streaming and syndication. In fact, in 2024, it was the most-streamed show overall.

At the end of 2025, the comedy The Big Bang Theory lost its place as the most-streamed show. According to Nielsen data reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bluey became the new leader, with Grey’s Anatomy and Stranger Things (which finished its final season on Netflix in December 2025) following close behind. The top 10 also included NCIS, SpongeBob SquarePants, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, The Big Bang Theory (now in tenth place), Law & Order: SVU, and Criminal Minds.
Even now, The Big Bang Theory remains incredibly popular, racking up 32.45 billion minutes of viewing time in 2025. This is especially impressive considering most other shows with similar numbers are still releasing new seasons, giving viewers a reason to keep watching – shows like Grey’s Anatomy on ABC and NCIS on CBS. However, falling from the top spot to number eight is a big change and a bit of a letdown.
Why The Big Bang Theory Has Enduring Popularity Despite Being Divisive
It’s true that The Big Bang Theory wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Early on, the show faced criticism for relying on potentially harmful stereotypes and for how it treated Penny, its one main female character – a situation some involved with the show later acknowledged was a mistake. While the show did improve in later seasons, those initial issues weren’t forgotten.
Even with its flaws, The Big Bang Theory became popular for a couple of key reasons. First, it had a fresh idea, blending nerdy interests with science. It launched at a time when comic book movies were becoming huge, which made it appealing to a wider audience. Second, it was a light and easy show to watch. Viewers could tune in and out without getting confused, and over time, many found it to be a comforting show to revisit.
With plans for a new spinoff series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, creator Chuck Lorre is giving The Big Bang Theory another chance to gain popularity on streaming. This new series, starring Kevin Sussman, will be the first in the franchise available exclusively on HBO Max. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to premiere later this year, potentially encouraging fans to rewatch the original Big Bang Theory.
