The Biggest Change The Wolf Among Us 2 Makes From the Original Game

The release of The Wolf Among Us season two has been a challenging process for Telltale Games, and there’s still work to be done before the sequel is available on consoles and PC. Originally announced in 2017, development faced setbacks, and the game had to be re-announced a few years later. After a decade in development, it’s finally scheduled to launch in 2027 – a significant amount of time has passed, and many things have changed.

Telltale Games no longer uses its old game-building engine, called the Telltale Tool. They’ve switched to the Unreal Engine – a popular choice for many developers, even large studios like Halo Studios. This change allows them to improve and expand on the gameplay from the first game. Hopefully, it also means fewer of the technical issues that were common in previous Telltale games.

Telltale and PM Studios gave a first look at gameplay for The Wolf Among Us 2 at Summer Game Fest 2026. Even though the demo was unfinished – with missing dialogue, voice acting, and interactive elements – it was still promising. It’s hard to fully evaluate the gameplay in such an early state, but it was great that the developers shared a preview and gave fans an idea of the finished product. They’re promising a lot with this game, and this early glimpse was enough to get people excited.

A major improvement in the sequel is how it portrays Bigby Wolf as a genuine detective. As Fabletown’s top investigator, players now get to do actual detective work. This means levels are fully open for exploration, allowing you to move around freely instead of following a set path, and investigate environments for clues.

In our demonstration, the character Bigby teamed up with a detective named Faye to solve a mystery and open a hidden door. The person playing the demo decided to examine an object by the window. This caused Faye to call Bigby over to look at a painting she’d discovered in another room. However, if the player had gone into that other room first and inspected the painting, Faye would have responded differently.

Following this, Bigby needed to investigate the room and find a missing book – it was the key to opening a secret door hidden behind a bookshelf. This is a simple example of how the game allows players to make choices that matter. Some choices will have an instant impact, like the painting mentioned earlier, while others won’t come into play until later. However, despite the possibility of making very different decisions, players might still experience the same key scenes and story events, as there’s a central storyline that connects everything. This consistent narrative is important, even as players explore different paths.

So, I heard from Telltale that they’re trying to let us actually explore the important areas in the game, which sounds awesome! They weren’t willing to say for sure if it’ll be in every scene, and we don’t know how much we’ll be able to wander around yet. But honestly, it’s a really cool idea and should make the sequel a lot more engaging to play.

Even after over a decade, The Wolf Among Us 2 looks promising. While we’re still unsure about the combat, story depth, and how the explorable areas will play out, it’s clear this sequel is much larger in scope than the original. One thing that will remain familiar is the option to play through the game without speaking – you can still experience a ‘silent’ playthrough.
