In 2025, there have been some remarkable and unexpected blockbusters at the box office, with many films outperforming their expectations significantly. The year began on a high note with the success of movies like “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners”, which not only launched a successful spring and summer season but also set records in their respective genres. Despite numerous hits this year, there’s one movie that truly exceeded all expectations by earning over a billion dollars at the box office. On Wednesday morning, it was announced that this record-breaking Disney blockbuster is now available for streaming.
On Wednesday, Disney’s live-action version of Lilo & Stitch was streamed for the first time, a movie that originally played in cinemas back in May. This film, of course, is a modern retelling of the beloved animated Disney classic from 2002. Since Lilo & Stitch has been the top earner at the box office this year, it’s expected to be the most-watched title on Disney+ for some time.
The significant achievement of the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch can be attributed to the enduring popularity of the initial movie over time. Upon its initial release, the original Lilo & Stitch earned around $270 million at the box office, which marked it as a strong success, but not an instant blockbuster. However, the franchise flourished for several years following this, thanks to direct-to-video sequels and a Disney Channel animated series.
Over time, Stitch’s reputation has grown worldwide, making him a cherished Disney symbol. It’s evident that the affection for this tale and its characters has significantly increased since the initial release.
Is the Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Different Than the Animated Movie?
Many live-action adaptations, especially those from Disney, often seem superfluous when considered alongside their original animated counterparts. For instance, 2019’s The Lion King, which is essentially a computer-generated version of the classic animation, retells the same story using the same songs and ends up looking significantly less appealing while doing so.
As a dedicated fan, I’d say it’s clear that the timeless charm of “Lilo & Stitch” from 2002 still holds up exceptionally well in the animation realm. Even with advancements in technology, the film continues to impress with its stunning visuals, as evidenced by the recent 4K transfer. On the other hand, the live-action version maintains a more standard cinematic look.
Regarding its visuals, the live-action version of “Lilo & Stitch” distinguishes itself somewhat in its latter part from the original animated movie. Towards the conclusion, the narrative undergoes significant alterations and several characters assume new roles.
Without a doubt, we could spend endless minutes debating the true impact of those modifications on the tale of Lilo & Stitch, and whether they truly enhance the story. However, it’s indisputable that these films have evolved in some way or another.
If you’re a fan of the classic Lilo & Stitch, you might find that the remake doesn’t live up to your expectations. As someone who holds the original Disney animated film in high regard, I personally didn’t find the remake to be as engaging. The first half of the film seems very similar to the original, and at times, I found myself wishing I was watching the original instead. However, it’s important to note that tastes can vary widely when it comes to movies, and many people seem to have enjoyed this updated version of Stitch.
