For a long time, Westerns were a significant part of the entertainment world, but they started losing popularity in the 1960s. While some Western films continued to be made, they didn’t attract as many viewers as before. The 1990s saw a resurgence of interest in the genre with movies like “Tombstone,” “Unforgiven,” and “The Quick and the Dead” rekindling audience enthusiasm for Westerns. However, one ’90s Western stood out from the rest, breaking box office records and earning seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
The movie under discussion is none other than “Dances With Wolves,” based on Michael Blake’s novel and directed by and starring Kevin Costner. Released in 1990, this three-hour film about a Union soldier connecting with Native Americans was a massive success, earning an impressive $424 million at the box office. Even thirty-five years later, it continues to be a favorite among Western enthusiasts. Recently, fans have been thrilled to discover that “Dances With Wolves” now streams on HBO Max.
On July 1st, Kevin Costner’s popular Western movie became available for streaming on HBO Max, providing subscribers with an enjoyable ’90s box-office smash they can now add to their viewing lists.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but reflect on my journey with Kevin Costner. His directorial debut, the captivating “Dances With Wolves,” marked a significant milestone for him. Over the years, he’s continued to grace the genre of Westerns, a testament to his enduring love for this classic film style. Following “Dances With Wolves,” he took on the role of Wyatt Earp in another production, and later, he doubled up as both director and lead actor in “The Postman,” “Open Range,” and most recently, “Horizon: An American Saga.
