Edmund McMillen, creator of the popular game The Binding of Isaac, recently told NoClip that he designed the game as a way to build his skills and experience before tackling his dream project.
Mewgenics is an exciting new game where you breed and train a team of cats. It’s a roguelike RPG, meaning it features challenging battles, powerful bosses, and a unique experience each time you play.
After the hit game Super Meat Boy, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes began developing their next project. Originally announced in 2012 as Mew-Genics, it would later be known as Mewgenics.
Despite being announced, the project was cancelled after only two years, leading McMillen to leave the studio. Later, in 2018, he regained the rights to the game and renamed it Mewgenics.
Game development began again, this time with Tyler Glaiel, a frequent collaborator of McMillen’s.
Gaining Experience While Working on the Project
So, I worked on The Binding of Isaac with Florian Himsl during development, but honestly? I was mostly using it as a learning experience. My real goal at the time was to get the skills I needed to eventually make Mewgenics. It was like a stepping stone to the game I *really* wanted to create.
Following the launch of *Super Meat Boy*, Tommy took a vacation. While he was resting, Edmund McMillen began brainstorming ideas for a new game.
In an interview, McMillen explained he wanted to create a simple roguelike game as practice for a larger, more ambitious roguelike project he and Tommy had planned. He then reached out to Florian, asking if he’d be interested in collaborating on a randomly generated game inspired by the dungeon design of the Legend of Zelda.
Florian said yes, and three months later, The Binding of Isaac was released.
Sadly, the Mew-Genics project was cancelled. According to Edmund McMillen, Tommy didn’t want to take the risk of continuing it. He found out the game was cancelled through someone else, not directly from the team.
Now that Edmund McMillen owns the rights to Mewgenics, he’s resumed development with help from Glaiel. The game currently boasts over 200 hours of gameplay, more than 200 enemy types, and over 800 unique items, with many more exciting features planned.

Mewgenics was initially planned to come out in 2025, but the developer, McMillen, thinks launching it around the busy holiday season in November or December would mean it gets overshadowed by bigger games. Plus, the extra time will let them refine and improve the game even more.
Mewgenics will release on PC this February 10, 2026.
