The Black Phone 2’s Mason Thames Addresses Possibility Of Franchise Trilogy (Exclusive)

Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone featured a terrifying serial killer, known as The Grabber (Ethan Hawke), and his conflict with a young boy named Finn (Mason Thames). Although Finn managed to defeat The Grabber in the first movie, the killer mysteriously returns in The Black Phone 2. Now that the second film has also been successful, fans are wondering if a third movie might be made to complete a Black Phone trilogy. ComicBook recently asked Mason Thames if there’s potential for another installment in the story.

Each film really stands on its own, and we only consider continuing if there’s a compelling story to tell – it’s never just about making money. I felt that way even with the first movie. I wasn’t sure how they could continue, but Scott reached out with an idea, and I immediately supported it. Scott has a clear vision, and if he believes there’s another story worth telling, it’s going to be good. So, if he comes up with another idea and sees a way to move the story forward, I’d definitely be open to it,” Thames explained.

The ending of The Black Phone didn’t clearly suggest a follow-up, but the sequel manages to both bring back the villain, The Grabber, and continue Finn’s story and his family’s journey in an interesting way. Although both films share a similar setting, they have distinct atmospheres, which is something the filmmaker, Thames, particularly appreciates.

You know, what really strikes me about The Black Phone films is how distinct they feel from each other. It’s not a huge difference, but the horror elements are approached in such different ways. If you’ve seen both, you’ll definitely notice it. But honestly, I think either movie works perfectly well even if you only see one!

Thames explained that the stories follow a character’s journey through different stages of life and dealing with a difficult experience. The first story focuses on a child becoming a teenager, the second on a teenager becoming a man, and the current one delves more into supernatural elements with incredibly striking dream sequences.

Returning to the role after five years was a surreal experience. A lot changes in a person’s life, and I’ve grown a lot as an actor, so it felt special to bring everything I’ve learned to the character of Finn. It was truly an honor.

Whether or not The Black Phone 3 will be made is still uncertain, but if it happens, this is the team most likely to pull it off.

The Black Phone 2 is available through Video on Demand right now.
