It appears there’s some intriguing development unfolding regarding the future of “The Blair Witch Project” series. Back in 1999, one of the most terrifying films ever made saw its release. “The Blair Witch Project” is among the pioneers and most influential examples of found footage horror movies. Remarkably, it was marketed as a genuine documentary, which heightened the fear factor for early viewers who believed they were witnessing the real-time psychological breakdown of these three friends, all of whom were suggested to have met a tragic end in the film. While not everyone was deceived, this unique approach could only thrive in its specific era.
Following the enormous popularity of the original, a subpar sequel was rushed out within a year, disappointing fans due to its lack of many elements that made the first film captivating. Fast forward 16 years, Hollywood attempted another installment in the series under the guise of a spin-off titled “Blair Witch“. Produced covertly under a pseudonym, it wasn’t until a screening at San Diego Comic-Con that the secret was unveiled – this was indeed a Blair Witch Project sequel. Regrettably, the reception for this film wasn’t much better, but it hinted at an exciting future for the franchise, potentially exploring alien and other supernatural entities beyond the actual Blair Witch. Sadly, those plans never materialized.
The Blair Witch Project Actor Shares Update on Franchise’s Future
It appears that Lionsgate and Blumhouse are developing a fresh take or reinvention of the classic horror film, The Blair Witch Project. Although initial news suggests a reboot, it remains uncertain if this new version will maintain any ties to previous instalments. Actor Michael C. Williams, who played Mike in the original film, has shared updates on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, hinting at some potential continuity or involvement.
The cast of The Blair Witch Project has openly expressed feelings of undercompensation given the movie’s massive success. With a staggering $248 million earnings against a meager $35,000 budget, it ranks among the most profitable films ever made. Consequently, it is assumed that they were not paid much initially. Although many actors can benefit financially from a share of box office receipts and royalties from re-releases, syndication on TV, and more, this group missed out on these benefits. Interestingly, they also took on the roles of their own crew members during their time in the woods.
Instead of keeping quiet about it, Williams decided to express on social media that he feels like a significant part of the franchise now, having been valued for the first time. He acknowledged that he couldn’t reveal too much but expressed gratitude towards Lionsgate and Jason Blum, who will be producing the new Blair Witch Project reboot. Although Blum wasn’t involved in the original film, he is now a key figure as he oversees the series’ future development. Williams also shared his enthusiasm for what’s coming up next in the Blair Witch universe and hinted at his character having found the map, suggesting that they are progressing, alluding to his character’s loss of the map in the original film.
There’s ambiguity about whether or not Edwards will appear in the forthcoming Blair Witch movie, or if he’s merely providing advice. Given the intricate way the original films manipulated time, it could be that Mike is still trapped in those woods, hoping for a rescuer. Yet, there may also be something more ominous at play. Regardless, this development seems favorable for the franchise because it potentially reconciles with one of its main actors and hints at progress on the next Blair Witch Project film.
