Rebel Wolves’ new RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker, will heavily feature vampires, but the studio is taking a fresh approach to their portrayal. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explained that the vampires in their game will be distinct from those typically seen in other games and movies. He emphasized that the team aims to tell a story with vampires, rather than a story about vampires, allowing for a unique take on the classic creatures.
Tomaszkiewicz explained that they aim to create a narrative featuring vampires, rather than simply about them. These vampires aren’t typical; they’re portrayed as untamed, forming small groups that sometimes clash. The game will explore the diverse origins of these vampires from around the world, revealing the reasons behind their actions through various stories. A key focus will be the complex relationships between them and how those bonds have evolved over time.
According to Tomasziewicz, the vampires in The Blood of Dawnwalker won’t follow all the usual vampire rules. Things like silver, garlic, and sunlight won’t affect them in the traditional ways. In fact, silver is actually important to the game’s story, as it allows the main character, Coen, to become the Dawnwalker – a unique being who is human by day and a vampire by night.
While our story includes classic vampire elements, things like silver, sunlight, and garlic don’t work quite as you’d expect,” he explained. “And the way Coen changes because of silver poisoning is a fresh take on the vampire myth.”
Because Coen is both human and a vampire – known as the Dawnwalker – the developers of Rebel Wolves created two different ways to play the game. During the day, Coen’s human form is weaker, though he’ll have other abilities to help him. At night, he’ll be much more powerful as a vampire. According to the game’s director, every quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker is designed to work well with both of these gameplay styles.
According to Tomaszczyk, the development team designed two different ways to play the game. When playing as a human, the experience focuses on feeling vulnerable but resourceful, offering unique tools and abilities. As a vampire, players are more powerful and can use supernatural abilities to achieve their objectives. Every story and quest was carefully crafted with both of these playstyles in mind.
Back in November 2025, Tomaszkiewicz mentioned that The Blood of Dawnwalker would feature vampires, rather than focusing on the creatures themselves. He also revealed that games like Dishonored heavily influenced the development of Rebel Wolves.
Currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker is expected to launch later this year. You can learn more about the game by watching the special launch year video the developers released recently.
