The Boy and the Gray Heron”
Storyline: Young Mahito, orphaned by war, relocates to his rural family’s estate. Enigmatic occurrences direct him to a hidden, ancient tower inhabited by a playful gray heron. When Mahito’s stepmother vanishes, he follows the heron into the tower, stepping into a magical realm that bridges the living and the deceased. As he embarks on an odyssey with the heron as his mentor, Mahito unravels the mysteries of this world and unearths truths about himself.
The initial animated feature film by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, who also penned the script, is a unique narrative that marks his directorial debut in a decade. This production, overseen by fellow co-founder Toshio Suzuki, boasts music composed by Miyazaki’s frequent collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for this movie, titled “Spinning Globe,” is written and sung by the renowned J-pop artist Kenshi Yonezu.
Speaking about the Academy Award won by The Boy and the Heron, Studio Ghibli’s co-founder Toshio Suzuki expressed his thoughts.
In his own words as the producer on “The Boy and the Heron”, Suzuki was deeply appreciative to receive the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. He wished to convey his heartfelt appreciation to the Academy. Furthermore, he wanted to extend his gratitude to everyone who contributed to the film’s production, and to those responsible for distributing the film globally.
I’ve been eagerly waiting to share this with you! Seven years ago, Director Hayao Miyazaki decided to come out of retirement, and here we are now with this magnificent masterpiece. It’s been a decade since his last film, ‘The Wind Rises,’ and what a journey it has been! The world of cinema has evolved significantly during these years, making the production of this movie quite a challenge. Yet, seeing it appreciated by people worldwide and receiving recognition fills me with immense gratitude. Both Hayao Miyazaki and I have seen our fair share of life’s passages. Receiving an honor like this at my age is truly heartening, and it serves as a reminder that we must continue to push the boundaries of creativity. Here’s to many more years of dedicated work!
