Life is tough for good people in the world of *The Boys*. We first meet Hughie Campbell as an ordinary guy with a simple job and hopeful future. Everything changes when his girlfriend is tragically killed by A-Train, a superhero with incredible speed. This event sets Hughie on a path of revenge against Vought and The Seven, causing him to compromise his values and even risk his life by taking Compound V – a dangerous substance with potentially fatal side effects.
Hughie isn’t alone in making poor decisions. The young heroes in *Gen V* are constantly pushed to their limits and forced to compromise their morals when facing the challenges Vought throws their way. But one student has crossed a major line, ironically becoming the villain they originally set out to fight by copying Homelander‘s tactics.
The Gloves Are Off in Gen V Season 2
Season one of *Gen V* concludes with the heroes imprisoned by Vought. They spend the following months at the Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center, overseen by Cipher, who is revealed to be the new dean of God U. Marie Moreau escapes her confinement, initially wanting to avoid further experimentation. But after encouragement from Starlight and a reunion with her friends, she decides to return to school to investigate the enigmatic Project Odessa. The group soon discovers that Marie is a survivor of the Odessa program and someone Cipher believes holds the key to changing the world.
At first, Marie refuses to believe what’s happening, but when Cipher brings her sister, Annabeth, to Elmira and almost kills her, she’s forced to accept the truth. Marie manages to save Annabeth just in time and vows to stop Cipher. She discovers Cipher may be holding Thomas Godolkin captive and sets out to rescue him, hoping he can end Cipher’s plan. Her friends offer to help, but Marie fears for their safety and a disagreement ensues. In a moment of frustration, she uses her powers to freeze everyone, a tactic reminiscent of Homelander’s control over others. Unknowingly, this act brings Marie closer to potentially leading The Seven instead of defeating Cipher.
All the Power Is Going to Marie’s Head
It’s heartbreaking to watch Marie struggle. Throughout Season 2 of *Gen V*, Cipher – who we learn is actually Thomas Godolkin – really gets inside her head, convincing her she’s the key to taking down Homelander. And Stan Edgar just adds to the pressure, implying she’s their only hope. Honestly, that’s a terrible burden for anyone, especially someone so young, and you can see the power starting to change her, not help her. The fact that she used her abilities on her friends – and made Cate promise she’d never do it again – means things will never be the same. I just know everyone is going to look at her differently now, and I’m really worried about where this is all heading.
As the season ends, Marie is likely to feel isolated, a feeling Homelander knows well. While she probably won’t start eliminating her enemies, she might not become the team player Starlight and Edgar are hoping for. The second season of *Gen V* could conclude with two incredibly powerful Supes determined to control humanity, willing to use force if they don’t get their way.
Gen V Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video.
