When The Boys debuted on Prime Video in 2019, it was a comedic take on the superhero genre, especially the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over time, it’s grown into a successful superhero franchise itself, with two spin-off shows already released and more planned. Even though The Boys Season 5 will be the last season of the main series, and another show has been cancelled, the franchise doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
Last year, Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, announced that the animated spinoff series, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, wouldn’t be returning to Prime Video. The show featured self-contained stories exploring the lives of different superheroes within the same universe, occasionally including characters like Homelander. Despite receiving positive reviews – a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes – Kripke initially said the show was cancelled because of low viewership. However, in a recent interview with Polygon, the showrunner Simon Racioppa explained the real reason behind the cancellation.
You know, it was never meant to be a big thing, just a little something extra for the fans. We whipped it up in about ten months while we were waiting for the main show to get back on track – the pandemic really threw everything into chaos, and we wanted to give people something to watch in the meantime.
What The Future Of The Boys Franchise Looks Like

Although Diabolical wasn’t officially cancelled, a return seems unlikely given creator Eric Kripke’s statements about viewership numbers. However, co-showrunner Henry Racioppa hasn’t ruled it out completely. He’s mentioned they have ideas for more stories, similar to Invincible (which he also works on), and that the world has potential, but he can’t announce anything concrete at this time.
Even without the planned spin-off Diabolical, the The Boys franchise is doing well. Season 5 of The Boys is set to be its most ambitious season yet, and there’s also strong anticipation for a third season of the college-based spin-off, Gen V, though it hasn’t been officially renewed.
More content is on the way for The Boys universe! A 1950s-set prequel, Vought Rising, is planned, bringing back Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront. Additionally, a spin-off titled The Boys: Mexico is in the works, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Blue Beetle), Diego Luna (Andor), and Gael García Bernal (Werewolf by Night) attached, and Luna and Bernal may also appear on screen.
Prime Video’s hit show, The Boys, has been incredibly popular, and the studio is exploring ways to expand the story beyond the main series. With so much history surrounding Vought and its superheroes, there’s a lot of room for new spinoffs. However, a second season of the animated series Diabolical isn’t likely to be announced anytime soon.
The Boys Season 5 debuts on Prime Video on April 8th, 2026.
