Since his first appearance, Homelander has consistently been one of the most powerful characters in The Boys, much like a Superman figure with a vast array of abilities and a history of violence. While he seems nearly indestructible, the show has revealed ways to hurt him, particularly through his fragile mental state, which could be his biggest vulnerability. As the series nears its end, many expected Homelander to finally face consequences, but it seems he’s actually growing stronger.
Even after a whole separate show focused on trying to defeat him, Homelander appears invincible. The recently released trailer for Season 5 of The Boys reveals his plan: he’s determined to obtain the original V-One formula to make himself immortal. This means the team needs to infect him with a virus before he can achieve that. By setting this up, the show quietly establishes that the TV version of Homelander is even more powerful than his comic book counterpart. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for those familiar with The Boys comics.)
Homelander Is at His Most Powerful in The Boys Season 5

The comic book version of Homelander, like the one in the TV show, is incredibly durable. However, his death in the comics is far more direct: he’s killed by his own clone in a brutal fight. While the TV series has indicated this won’t happen there, it’s resulted in a Homelander who is even stronger and harder to defeat than the one from the original comics, requiring a more complex solution to bring him down.
The show has hinted that Homelander can’t be defeated through physical force. He’s survived fights with other super-powered individuals without injury, leading everyone to look for other ways to stop him. Interestingly, his defeat was much simpler in the original comic books, making that version of the character seem less powerful.
It’s almost certain that Homelander will die in the final season of The Boys; the big question is how it will happen. The show emphasizes his god-like status, even with lines from the trailer like “Prepare America for my ascension” and “To those who seek to destroy me…I offer oblivion.” However, all the focus on his powers and the possibility of killing him with a virus could be a deliberate distraction.
Season 1 of Gen V introduced the supe-killing virus, while Season 2 revealed V-One. This substance will be a major focus in Season 5 of The Boys, and likely in the upcoming Vought Rising spinoff series starring Stormfront and Soldier Boy, both of whom received V-One. While it’s dangerous if Homelander obtains V-One, many who’ve already taken it have died, suggesting the show may be setting up a scenario where Homelander can’t achieve his goal of physical immortality even if he gets his hands on it.
As a longtime viewer of The Boys, I’ve been wondering who, if anyone, could actually defeat Homelander. Honestly, it feels like only three characters have a real shot: Billy Butcher, now with powers of his own, Soldier Boy, and shockingly, Homelander’s son, Ryan. The latest trailer showing Homelander sitting in the Oval Office has me cautiously optimistic – maybe we’ll finally get that satisfying physical confrontation the comics delivered. The final episodes drop on Prime Video this April, and I’m really eager to see how the showrunners manage to take him down. They’ve built him up to be incredibly powerful, so it won’t be easy, but it promises to be a thrilling conclusion.
