The Boys Finally Solved a Years-Long Mystery (& the Explanation Was Pretty Simple)

The Boys consistently keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. During Season 4, Billy Butcher distances himself from his team to collaborate with Joe Kessler, a CIA agent who seems to have similar aims. However, Kessler’s behavior is strange-he pushes Butcher to extreme lengths and becomes frustrated when Butcher doesn’t go far enough. It’s eventually revealed that Kessler isn’t a real person, but a hallucination stemming from the tumor in Butcher’s brain. Once this truth is revealed, it’s easy to spot the subtle hints throughout the season that suggest Kessler was never actually present. However, not all of the mysteries in The Boys receive this level of focused attention.

At the end of the first season of the The Boys spinoff, Gen V, something major happens that completely disrupts life at Godolkin University. The situation escalates so much that even Homelander has to show up to try and control it. While we’ve seen the consequences of that event, one question remained unanswered until the middle of Season 2.

Cate Dunlap Can’t Keep It Together Anymore in Gen V Season 1

Along with students like Luke Riordan and Andre Anderson, Cate Dunlap is considered one of the best at God U when Marie Moreau arrives. Initially, she’s welcomed and shown around by the popular crowd, and things seem good. However, tragedy strikes when Luke, known as Golden Boy, takes his own life after discovering the truth about the school. Devastated by the loss of her boyfriend, Cate withdraws into herself, and things get even worse when it’s revealed that her adoptive mother, Indira Shetty, is developing a virus designed to eliminate all Supes, and is also experimenting on Luke’s brother, Sam. Overwhelmed by grief and betrayal, Cate responds with a violent outburst on the God U campus.

Marie intervenes to prevent anyone from getting harmed, confronting Cate directly. Although she hasn’t fully mastered her abilities, she’s determined to do what’s right. Initially, Marie easily stops Cate, but the situation escalates when she unintentionally destroys her former friend’s arm. Everyone on campus is shocked, and even Homelander condemns Marie’s actions. However, things are clarified when Cate reappears in The Boys Season 4 with both arms intact. It appears Vought restored her arm while she worked for Homelander, but Gen V Season 2 reveals a different explanation.

Turning a Blind Eye Is No Longer a Possibility for Cate

At the beginning of Gen V Season 2, Cate is reunited with her former friends when they all return to God U, but they aren’t pleased to see her. The reunion takes a dark turn when Cate discovers that Andre passed away while they were all held at Elmira Adult Rehabilitation Center. Seeking answers, she approaches the new dean, Cipher, but he refuses to cooperate. Cate then attempts to repair her relationships with Marie, Jordan Li, and Emma Meyer, which leads to a physical altercation. She winds up in the hospital, and instead of seeing her arm fully healed, it’s revealed that half of it is still missing.

I have to say, learning about Cate’s backstory really reframed things for me. It turns out she’s been relying on a prosthetic arm ever since the big fight back in Season 1! In Season 2, Episode 5, the guards at Elmira – after Cipher sends her there for trying to expose him – force her to take it off. That means the entire time, she’s been battling with a significant disadvantage. And considering her brain injury is already causing issues with her powers, this just exacerbates everything. It’s a fascinating detail that makes her struggles even more compelling – she’s been fighting with one arm tied behind her back the whole time! You can find more details about the show here.
