Life is tough for ordinary people in superhero stories. They constantly face the threat of villains causing massive destruction, potentially wiping out entire cities or even half of all life. Usually, heroes step in to save the day, but not in the world of *The Boys*. This Prime Video series flips the script: the heroes, employed by Vought, are often the *cause* of the problems, recklessly using their powers and hurting innocent people. Hughie Campbell can certainly tell you what it’s like to be a victim of a rogue ‘Supe’.
For its first four seasons, *The Boys* showed us the dangers of unchecked power, highlighting how terrifying villains with abilities can be. But the show’s spin-off, *Gen V*, is challenging that idea by introducing a new concept that makes fighting a super-powered rogue seem surprisingly easy.
Cipher Is Finally Putting His Cards on the Table in Gen V
Going back to Godolkin University has been tough for Marie Moreau, Jordan Li, and Emma Meyer. Other students don’t know how to act around them following the events at the end of *Gen V* Season 1, and it’s hard to pretend everything is normal after Andre Anderson died trying to save them. Determined to honor his memory, the group decides to reveal the truth about what’s happening at the school, no matter the cost. They start by focusing on Cipher, a new instructor who is pushing Marie to unlock her full potential, believing she could even surpass Homelander. During a training session where Cipher asks Marie to move blood bags, she begins to suspect something is wrong with him.
Okay, so I just finished the latest episode, and things are getting seriously intense! Marie went back to the dorm and told her friends she searched Cipher’s place but couldn’t find any evidence of Compound V, which leads her to think he’s actually *not* a Supe. They immediately decided to set up a camera in his suite, hoping to catch him slipping up during the planned fight between Marie and Jordan. But the dean figured out what they were up to! And wow, he really showed Cate Dunlap what he can do – he took control of Jordan and made them fight Marie. At first, it looked like Cipher *was* a Supe, but now I’m starting to think there’s something else going on, something way bigger and potentially catastrophic, not just for Godolkin University, but for everyone.
Vought May Finally Be Launching Its Contingency Plan
Besides trying to stop Cipher, Marie and her friends are investigating Project Odessa, a program Vought is restarting at the school. Although Cipher appears connected to it, the focus shifts when they discover Marie was created *by* the project. The goal of Odessa remains unknown, but it’s striking that both Marie and Cipher can control Supes – Marie through their blood, and Cipher seemingly by entering their minds. However, the fact that Cipher doesn’t have Compound V in his system suggests he’s unique and potentially being used by Vought to test a way to control Supes, with the students at God U as his subjects.
It’s well known that Vought’s power has been declining since Homelander started wanting more than just being a symbol. Stan Edgar and others in charge likely aren’t happy about that. Releasing someone like Cipher could help Vought regain control, particularly if Cipher can convince Marie – who is very powerful – to join the fight against Homelander.
Gen V Season 2 is streaming on Prime Video.
